The unexpected drop of Shedeur Sanders from a projected first-round pick to a surprising fifth-round selection has emerged as one of the most divisive topics following last week’s NFL Draft.
ESPN’s veteran draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. expressed strong defense of Sanders’ talent, demonstrating visible disbelief when the former Colorado quarterback fell to the Cleveland Browns.
Immediately after Sanders’ name was called, Kiper criticized NFL teams, sparking a notable on-air exchange between him and his colleague Rece Davis.
Kiper asserted that for over fifty years, NFL franchises have been “clueless” in their evaluations of quarterbacks. His frustration stemmed from his belief that Sanders represents one of the toughest quarterbacks the league has seen.
NFL analyst Louis Riddick interjected, clarifying that the focus shouldn’t center on Sanders’ ability to play, but rather on whether NFL teams wanted to draft him. Davis aligned with Riddick, remarking that the draft results had already voiced its verdict.
This on-air disagreement raised questions about underlying tensions between Davis and Kiper. However, during a recent guest segment on OutKick’s show, “Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich,” Davis reassured fans that there is no animosity between him and Kiper.
Davis acknowledged the challenging role Kiper plays as a draft analyst. He emphasized that Kiper’s contributions significantly shaped the draft landscape.
“First of all, I’m not here to engage in some common critique,” Davis told Dakich. “The attendance in Detroit last year can largely be credited to Mel’s impact on the draft.”
Davis added, “Mel’s duty is to rank players and defend these rankings. I respect his right to disagree. I don’t mind his commentary during our discussions; I just felt we collectively overlooked the fundamental principle of Occam’s razor—the simplest answer is often the correct one. We simply don’t know all the factors at play.”
Davis pointed out that Sanders’ handling of the pre-draft process came under intense scrutiny and likely influenced his draft stock.
“At that stage in the draft, it’s very likely that something in the pre-draft period led teams to hesitate in selecting Shedeur Sanders,” he said. “While it’s certainly debatable whether he ranks among the top five quarterbacks based on tape analysis, I find it challenging to accept he wasn’t worthy of first- or second-round consideration. That strikes me as excessive. Something must have transpired, which is why I felt our discussion lacked acknowledgment of this crucial detail.”
Davis assured viewers that his relationship with Kiper remains strong, expressing enjoyment in their professional interactions.
“Everything’s fine. I genuinely had no idea there was an issue until I started getting messages about it,” he noted. “Discussions like these are part of our job. Occasionally, we must challenge each other’s views for the greater benefit of the analysis and the show itself. Mel’s contributions are invaluable, and I thoroughly enjoy collaborating with him.”
Following the Browns’ selection of Sanders on the final day of the draft, the young quarterback took to social media to share his gratitude with a succinct but heartfelt message: “Thank you, GOD.”
Sanders concluded the 2024 season at Colorado with impressive statistics, amassing 4,134 passing yards. He prepares to enter a competitive quarterback room in Cleveland, joining the ranks with Deshaun Watson, Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel.
As Sanders embarks on this new chapter, attention turns to how he will navigate the challenges and opportunities this crowded lineup presents.
