FIRST ON FOX: Following violent altercations during recent anti-Trump protests in Los Angeles, the LAPD’s largest union is demanding accountability. Officers were injured while confronting demonstrators protesting the administration’s immigration policies.
In a statement issued to Fox News Digital, the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) expressed concern about a “communication breakdown” during the protests. The union stated, “The arrest of individuals that are attacking police officers should be a no-brainer for any competent incident commander.” Unfortunately, they stated, such actions did not occur during the protests.
The union board continued, saying, “When those committing violence against anyone, let alone police officers, are allowed to masquerade as peaceful protesters, it sends the wrong message and crushes officer morale.” They hope the situation will be investigated thoroughly, similar to past incidents involving crowd control.
Over the course of Sunday and Monday, thousands participated in demonstrations across Los Angeles, primarily protesting President Trump’s mass deportation program. Protesters blocked critical roadways, including the heavily trafficked 101 Freeway, while several individuals were detained amid clashes but released shortly thereafter.
Multiple confrontations occurred between officers and protesters, with objects being thrown at police, who were prepared with non-lethal weapons and riot gear. Despite the turmoil, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell confirmed that no stand-down order had been issued, asserting that the department was closely monitoring the situation.
On-site Incident Commander Lillian Carranza clarified that once officers came under attack, the assembly became unlawful. However, she did not provide clarity on whether an arrest directive was issued. She stated, “We are all for supporting the peaceful exercise of freedom of speech and assembly not when it turns violent.” This ambiguity raises questions about the decision-making process during the protests.
Carranza elaborated on the LAPD’s crowd control objectives, which include ensuring a visible and approachable police presence while securing participants’ safety. Protecting life and property remains crucial, alongside taking appropriate actions against law violators.
The LAPPL asserted, “We don’t dispute that the Chief didn’t give a stand down order; it was the misguided incident commander that did, and we believe it put officers in danger.” They emphasized the importance of addressing where communication errors occurred, aiming for a safer environment for both peaceful demonstrators and law enforcement.
Sources within the LAPD revealed that several officers were left feeling frustrated and confused by directives during the protests. This sentiment highlights the need for improved clarity and guidance for officers in the field.
Protesters also brought attention to broader immigration issues, carrying signs and expressing their opposition to Trump’s policies. The demonstrations featured slogans like, “No human is illegal on stolen land” and “Fight ignorance, not immigrants.”
Videos circulating on social media captured moments where protesters vandalized vehicles and walls, further escalating tensions during the unrest.
In a related context, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has ramped up operations, reportedly arresting over 7,400 illegal immigrants across the country in just nine days. The agency has also issued nearly 6,000 detainers, showcasing the administration’s aggressive approach to immigration enforcement.
Fox News Digital has sought comments from Mayor Karen Bass’s office regarding the incidents, emphasizing the ongoing conversation about safety, accountability, and the complex dynamics between law enforcement and protest movements. As the situation continues to evolve, stakeholders are closely watching how city officials and law enforcement navigate similar challenges in the future.
