Nancy Pelosi Urges New Pope Leo XIV to Address Mass Deportations

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, expressed her hope that newly elected Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff in history, will take a public stand against mass deportations in the United States. Her comments came during a recent interview where she emphasized the need for moral leadership on immigration issues.

In a statement, Pelosi highlighted the Pope’s awareness of the difficult conditions that force many individuals to migrate. She was responding to questions from MSNBC’s Chris Jansing about the pontiff’s potential impact as a voice for those who face deportation.

Jansing noted the Pope’s previous social media posts, which criticized certain immigration policies during the Trump administration. She asked Pelosi whether she believed that the new pontiff could serve as a significant moral force amidst current debates over immigration and deportations.

“I certainly hope so,” Pelosi replied, stressing the importance of the Pope’s moral guidance during this turbulent time.

In February, Prevost had shared an article from the National Catholic Reporter, which critiqued statements by Vice President JD Vance regarding prioritizing love for fellow citizens over marginalized groups, including undocumented immigrants. The article underscored the Catholic teaching of unconditional love and support for the vulnerable.

Reflecting on the Pope’s previous comments, Pelosi stated, “From his comments prior to being elected as Pope, he has made clear what his values are and how he views the current situation regarding migration. It is crucial for us to heed the words of our elected officials and religious leaders as they speak on these issues.”

John Prevost, Pope Leo’s brother, offered insight into the pontiff’s stance on immigration issues. In comments to WBBM, a CNN affiliate, he remarked that Pope Leo XIV is likely worried about the direction of U.S. immigration policy. He described the treatment of immigrants as a moral injustice that needs addressing.

“I think he recognizes that the United States is going down the wrong path regarding immigration issues. This is a human matter. People are human beings first, regardless of where they come from,” John Prevost elaborated.

During the Trump administration, immigration reform was a focal point, with policies leading to significant ICE operations aimed at deporting undocumented individuals. Within the first 100 days, agencies reported numerous arrests, including thousands of individuals who had previous criminal charges against them.

In light of the political landscape, Trump acknowledged Pope Leo’s historic election, expressing pride in having an American Pope. He conveyed his eagerness to meet the pontiff, calling the moment a great honor for the nation.

Trump wrote on Truth Social, “It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”

JD Vance, a recent Catholic convert who also met with Pope Francis before his passing, congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election. He expressed hope for the Pope’s guidance over his congregation during challenging times.

“Congratulations to Leo XIV, the first American Pope, on his election! I’m sure millions of American Catholics and other Christians will pray for his successful work leading the Church. May God bless him!” Vance posted on social media.

Pope Leo XIV’s election not only marks a significant turn in the Catholic Church’s history but also places him at a pivotal point as millions look to him for guidance on pressing social issues, particularly immigration. The coming months will reveal how actively he engages with these critical matters.

As discussions around immigration continue to evolve, many anticipate how the Pope will address these challenges, hoping for advocacy that aligns with the Church’s commitment to compassion and social justice. The public and political spheres are watching closely, awaiting the new pontiff’s statements and actions regarding one of the most divisive issues in American society today.

The world now looks toward Pope Leo XIV, wishing for him to embody the principles of understanding and hope in his role as a spiritual leader and moral compass for a divided nation.
