Army Sergeant Brian Lieberman, at just 22 years of age, showcased remarkable bravery when he saved the life of a 14-year-old girl amid a shooting incident at his apartment complex. Although he reflects that he was simply doing his job, the United States Army recognizes Lieberman as a hero deserving of the prestigious Soldier’s Medal.
Sgt. Lieberman serves as a medic within the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. This recognition stems from an event on June 5, 2023, when a gunman opened fire at the Carrington Place apartment complex, striking a teenage girl in the back.
The Soldier’s Medal, an esteemed award established in 1926, highlights individuals who demonstrate heroism while facing personal danger. To qualify, recipients must act decisively, risking their own lives in efforts to protect others. It is not simply about being a good Samaritan.
On that fateful day, as chaos erupted outside, Lieberman’s military training instincts propelled him into action. He explained, “I looked out my window with my roommate and saw people screaming and running near the pool area of our complex. Without hesitation, I grabbed my weapon and rushed out while my roommate called 911.”
Upon reaching the scene, Lieberman encountered a group of distressed individuals who directed him to the girl lying injured in the street. He quickly assessed her condition and identified a single gunshot wound to her lower back.
As he began rendering aid to the victim, the situation took a dangerous turn when the gunman returned. Lieberman recounted, “The shooter’s vehicle drove past us again, and my roommate yelled for me to take cover. I instinctively shielded the girl while bullets flew around us.” He then returned fire at the suspect’s vehicle in an effort to protect the young victim.
Throughout the unfolding crisis, Lieberman remained focused on the girl’s wounds, applying his combat medic skills until professional medical personnel arrived at the scene. His quick thinking and response not only saved her life but also demonstrated his commitment to serving others, a fundamental value in military training.
On a momentous day at Fort Bragg, Lieberman received the Soldier’s Medal for his courageous actions. However, despite this accolade, he exhibits a remarkable level of humility. He attributes his selfless actions to his upbringing.
Lieberman shared, “It all started at home. My mom has been a nurse for over 30 years, and my father served as both a paramedic and police officer for a combined 30 years. Growing up, I saw my parents consistently go above and beyond to help those in need, regardless of the circumstances.”
In his reflections on the life-saving incident, Lieberman emphasized the role of his roommate, who provided crucial support during the crisis. He stated, “I would not have received this award without my roommate’s assistance that day. He should be recognized alongside me for his contribution to the situation.”
Lieberman specified, “My roommate brought my medical bag and the materials I needed to treat her injuries. While he wasn’t in the line of fire like I was, without his support, I wouldn’t have succeeded in helping that girl.”
Lieberman’s experience underscores the vital role of military training and readiness in emergency situations. His ability to remain composed and act decisively during the chaos speaks volumes about the preparation that service members undergo. In high-stress scenarios, every second counts, and his swift response exemplifies the dedication to saving lives.
In discussing the values instilled in him through military service, Lieberman noted the importance of teamwork and reliance on fellow service members. He said, “In the military, we learn that we stand together in the face of danger. It’s not just about individual bravery; it’s a collective effort to serve and protect one another and our communities.”
The day that Lieberman saved the life of a young girl will remain etched in his memory, not only for the heroism displayed but also for the influence of his upbringing and military training on his actions. The Soldier’s Medal serves as a testament to his courage and commitment, reflecting the finest traditions of military service.
Lieberman hopes that his story will inspire others to embrace similar values of service and selflessness, especially in times of crisis. As he continues his journey in the Army, he remains dedicated to helping others and upholding the principles of bravery and compassion.
