Defense Highlights Jealousy Motive in Tragic Death of Officer John O’Keefe

Examining Text Message Evidence

During the proceedings, defense attorney Alan Jackson pressed Sgt. Yuri Bukhenik of the Massachusetts State Police about potential motivations that might have led Higgins to confront O’Keefe. Jackson queried, “Did you, in your mind, in your opinion, find a motive for Brian Higgins to perhaps want to confront John O’Keefe because of jealousy?”

In response, Bukhenik appeared to dismiss the idea, stating that O’Keefe was not pursuing Higgins, but rather it was Read who had shown interest. The cross-examination highlighted a lengthy exchange of text messages between Read and Higgins leading up to O’Keefe’s death. The messages contained flirtatious remarks, invitations to meet, discussions about a kiss outside of O’Keefe’s residence, and references to heavy drinking.

The Night of the Incident

On the evening before his death, all three individuals were reported to be present at the Waterfall Bar and Grille. Jackson inquired whether there was any surveillance footage showing Higgins behaving aggressively toward O’Keefe. Bukhenik, however, indicated that while there was a possibility of tension, he personally did not observe any overt aggression.

Significantly, Higgins sent two texts to Read later that same night, which went unanswered. Jackson emphasized the possible jealousy Higgins may have felt upon seeing Read enter the bar with O’Keefe after weeks of intimate communication.

“After seeing her walk in with John O’Keefe and sending a message saying, ‘Umm. Well,’ do you see that as a reasonable scenario for Brian Higgins to feel jealous?” Jackson pressed. Bukhenik admitted that, while there was a possibility for jealousy, he did not investigate this angle further.

Bukhenik’s testimony concluded after hours of questioning, wherein he discussed various aspects of the case. He noted that marks on the back of O’Keefe’s jeans were consistent with grass stains, which he theorized resulted from O’Keefe falling to the ground after an alleged assault.

Proctor had disparaged Read using derogatory terms and expressed disdain for one of her defense attorneys while making questionable comments about searching Read’s phone for personal images.

The following morning, officers discovered O’Keefe’s body outside, buried beneath snow. Several witnesses claimed to have overheard Read saying repeatedly, “I hit him,” when she and two friends found O’Keefe’s lifeless form.
