EXCLUSIVE — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has reported an astonishing 214% rise in applications for positions within the U.S. Secret Service when compared to the same time frame last year.
Between January 20 and May 1 last year, approximately 7,000 applications were submitted. In stark contrast, the current year has seen over 22,000 individuals expressing interest in becoming Secret Service agents under the administration of President Joe Biden.
A spokesperson from DHS commented on this significant increase, stating, “For years, the prior administration demoralized and deprived our dedicated law enforcement personnel, particularly those in the Secret Service, of necessary resources.” This statement reinforces the agency’s focus on enhancing the operational capabilities of its agents.
“Our nation faced severe consequences from that flawed approach. President Trump himself narrowly escaped life-threatening situations as a result of it. However, now that we have implemented reforms within the Secret Service and allocated essential resources, we are witnessing an unprecedented influx of applications. Americans inherently possess the desire to serve and protect. We must facilitate this drive,” the spokesperson added.
The Secret Service, known for its critical role in national security, currently employs 8,210 individuals. This includes 3,904 special agents, 1,560 uniformed division members, 265 technical law enforcement personnel, and 2,481 in administrative, professional, and technical roles.
Former Secret Service agent Tim Miller shared insights into the recent surge, stating, “The Secret Service is returning to core missions and standards that established its reputation. This shift inspires highly qualified individuals to consider joining the agency.” With the appointment of a new director, the agency is redoubling its efforts to attract dedicated professionals committed to its crucial mission.
Miller noted the rigorous standards he faced during his hiring process, which included service as a U.S. Marine Corps officer and a police officer. He believes that aspiring agents now aim to be among the best and that the agency is focused on reclaiming its esteemed reputation.
The Secret Service, established in June 1865, was initially formed to combat counterfeiting of U.S. currency. However, its responsibilities expanded to include the protection of the President and other high-profile individuals shortly after the assassination of President William McKinley in 1901.

The Secret Service has tackled myriad challenges, particularly in connection with the protection of former President Donald Trump. During his 2024 campaign, the agency managed security amidst two assassination attempts — one occurring at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13 and the other at Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on September 15.
Miller stated, “The Secret Service has always been a premier protection agency until the past decade. By returning to its foundational goals and reinstating the standards for agent qualifications, we are witnessing a meaningful change that attracts quality candidates to the force.”
