California Drug Bust Leads to Rescue of Exotic Spider Monkey

A recent drug operation in Northern California resulted in the surprising rescue of three exotic animals, chief among them a young spider monkey now under the care of the Oakland Zoo.

On May 6, deputies from the Solano County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop in Vallejo, an unincorporated area located approximately 30 miles from San Francisco. The stop culminated in the arrest of 50-year-old Clifford Vincenty, a local resident, and the seizure of around half a pound of methamphetamine.

Following the traffic stop, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Vincenty’s residence the following day. During this search, officers discovered an additional pound of meth, over $2,000 in cash, two live rattlesnakes, and the spider monkey.

Animal Control Steps In to Assist

Authorities from animal control swiftly intervened to remove the exotic animals from the property. The spider monkey was subsequently transported to the Oakland Zoo, which is situated about 40 miles south of Vallejo.

Named Violeta, the approximately 18-month-old monkey was found to be in decent health, according to a zoo news release. Isabella Linares, the marketing manager at the Oakland Zoo, reported that the veterinary team has taken steps to ensure Violeta’s health and comfort during her stay.

Efforts to Ensure Violeta’s Well-Being

“Veterinary hospital staff are focused on Violeta’s overall well-being,” Linares shared. “She’s doing well in her temporary home where keepers have set up enrichment opportunities, including blankets and toys to keep her comfortable and stimulated.”

Moreover, Violeta’s diet comprises a healthy mix of fruits and vegetables, supplemented with formula to reduce the risk of health complications. “She is adjusting as best she can but has a long road ahead,” Linares added, underscoring the challenges that lie before the young monkey.

The Dark Side of the Exotic Pet Trade

The Oakland Zoo issued a statement highlighting significant concerns about the dangers posed by the exotic pet trade, particularly relating to infant spider monkeys. Colleen Kinzley, the vice president of animal care, conservation, and research at the zoo, stressed the critical issues surrounding this illegal and unethical practice.

“Infant spider monkeys are frequently captured after their mothers are shot down from trees,” Kinzley explained. “Often, the baby monkey suffers injuries or fatalities due to the fall. Those that survive into the pet trade rarely receive the proper diet or socialization with other monkeys, leading to severe physical and mental health issues.”

Kinzley emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the threats these animals face, advocating for decisive actions to eliminate this horrifying trade.

Legal Consequences for Clifford Vincenty

In light of these findings, Vincenty has been charged with possession of a controlled substance for sale, as stated by the Solano County Sheriff’s Office. He could also face additional charges related to the illegal possession of exotic animals.
