Invasive Asian Needle Ant Threatens Health Across 19 States

An aggressive invasive species is spreading across the United States, posing significant health risks, according to experts. The Asian needle ant has emerged as a crucial threat due to its painful sting and potential for causing severe allergic reactions.

This insect, initially introduced to America in the 1930s, originated in regions like China and Korea. Dan Suiter, a Georgia-based entomologist and professor of urban entomology at the University of Georgia, notes that this species went largely unnoticed for nearly a century.

“It never really garnered a lot of attention,” Suiter explained, emphasizing the need for increased public awareness about this hidden menace.

Recent Spread of Asian Needle Ants in the U.S.

The Asian needle ant has now infiltrated 19 states across the nation. Alarmingly, its stings sent three individuals to hospitals due to severe anaphylactic reactions last year. Health officials underline that vigilance is essential, given that its distribution extends primarily through southeastern states like Georgia and North Carolina, but sightings have also been confirmed in Washington and possibly Texas, pending further verification.

Suiter stresses that the ant’s typically unnoticed presence is misleading. “This is something I thought needed to be brought to people’s attention because it’s just a hidden little critter,” he said. These ants often dwell in shady areas enriched with hardwood trees, blending into the forest floor’s leaf litter.

The U.S. Forest Service has identified the sting of the Asian needle ant as its most alarming characteristic. Suiter shared his personal experience, stating, “The sting… it’s odd.
