Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has called for former FBI Director James Comey to face legal consequences for an Instagram post that allegedly suggested violence against President Donald Trump. Gabbard’s strong remarks followed Comey’s controversial images shared online this past Thursday.
Comey posted a photo featuring seashells arranged in the numbers “86 47”. To many observers, the number “86” is widely recognized as a signal for eliminating someone, while “47” typically refers to the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump.
Captioning the image, Comey wrote, “Cool shell formation on my beach walk…” However, he later deleted the post in response to backlash.
On Fox News’s “Jesse Watters Primetime,” Gabbard condemned Comey’s actions. She expressed that regardless of his intentions behind the image, he must be held accountable under the law. “The rule of law states that people like him who issue direct threats against the POTUS must be held responsible,” she asserted.
Gabbard did not hold back, insisting that Comey should face imprisonment for what she labeled a potential incitement to violence.
After removing the contentious Instagram post, Comey claimed ignorance regarding the violent implications of the numbers. He stated, “I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence. It never occurred to me but I oppose violence of any kind so I took the post down.”
This assertion, however, did little to quell Gabbard’s concerns or lessen the gravity of her statements.
Gabbard articulated her worry for Trump’s safety, noting that previous assassination attempts have occurred in the past. She said, “I’m very concerned for the president’s life; we’ve already seen assassination attempts.” Gabbard firmly believes that Comey’s actions warrant serious scrutiny.
Following the immediate fallout from the post, a source within the Secret Service confirmed that they are aware of the situation. Agents are reportedly assigned to investigate and interview Comey regarding the implications of his post.
The White House also voiced its disapproval of Comey’s post. Taylor Budowich, deputy chief of staff and Cabinet Secretary, publicly denounced the post, labeling it “deeply concerning.” He emphasized that Comey’s message, particularly while Trump is on an international trip, comes with alarming implications.
Budowich took to social media platform X to express his concerns. He articulated that Comey’s post could easily be interpreted as a threat against the sitting president, stating, “This is deeply concerning to all of us and is being taken seriously.”
James Comey served as the FBI Director during Trump’s early presidency until his dismissal. His position and past actions render his statements and social media presence particularly scrutinized amid the current political climate.
When approached for comment by Fox News Digital regarding the uproar, Comey did not respond, which has only fueled further public interest in the incident.
The controversial post has ignited a discussion about the responsibilities public figures carry, particularly in the realm of social media communication. Gabbard’s insistence on accountability shines a light on the expectations society has for leaders and former officials.
As the investigation unfolds, the implications of Comey’s words serve as a reminder of the potential ripple effect that a single post can have in today’s interconnected world. Gabbard’s call for legal repercussions underscores the seriousness with which threats toward political leaders must be treated.
In an age where every word is scrutinized, the incident emphasizes the need for clarity, responsibility, and respect in political discourse. The ongoing saga reflects the broader sentiments that underscore political dialogue and the safety of public figures.
