The Chicago Sun-Times stirred controversy on Tuesday when it acknowledged that it had published an AI-generated summer reading list containing books that do not exist. One of the fictional entries featured prominently on the list was “Nightshade Market” by Min Jin Lee. The book was described as a gripping narrative that unfolds in Seoul’s underground economy, following the lives of three women whose journeys intersect within an illegal night market. Themes of class, gender, and the hidden economic structures within affluent societies were purportedly explored in the narrative. However, Min Jin Lee confirmed on her social media account that there is no such book.

“I have not written and will not be writing a novel called ‘Nightshade Market.’ Thank you,” Lee stated in her post.

Errors Arising from Freelance Contributions

Chicago Public Media’s CEO, Melissa Bell, commented on the situation in an article published on Tuesday. She explained that the oversight stemmed from a freelance writer affiliated with one of their partner organizations, King Features. Bell admitted that the AI-generated list was published without proper vetting by the editorial team.

“We are in a moment of great transformation in journalism and technology, and at the same time, our industry continues to be besieged by business challenges,” Bell noted. “This should serve as a learning opportunity for all journalism organizations. Our work is valuable because of the humanity that informs it.”

In response to the fallout from the incident, Bell announced that the Chicago Sun-Times will reassess its partnerships with content providers like King Features. Identification of the Freelance Writer

Further reports from the Chicago Sun-Times identified the freelance writer responsible for the list as Marco Buscaglia. He confirmed that he relied on AI to generate this story and others without informing his supervisors or adequately verifying the results.

King Features Takes Action

In a subsequent statement, King Features announced that it would be terminating its relationship with Buscaglia. The organization cited his violation of strict policies regarding the use of AI, underscoring the seriousness of the breach.

Victor Lim, the marketing director for Chicago Public Media, provided additional comments on Wednesday. He stated, “Regarding our usage of generative AI, we remain committed to producing journalism that is accurate, ethical, and deeply human. While generative AI may assist with certain tasks—such as summarizing documents or conducting data analysis—our editorial content will always be produced and refined by skilled journalists.”
