The Trump Treasury Department has launched a significant initiative against the Cartel del Noreste, one of the most notorious criminal organizations operating along the southern border. Local border experts describe these newly announced sanctions as a decisive move aimed at dismantling an ongoing threat to American safety.
On Wednesday, the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control imposed sanctions against two prominent members of the Cartel del Noreste. Mexican nationals Miguel Angel de Anda Ledezma and Ricardo Gonzalez Sauceda now face restrictions that freeze their assets and economic interests within the United States.
This cartel is included among the eight criminal organizations recently designated as foreign terrorist entities by the U.S. Department of State, a classification that underscores the severe nature of their activities.
While announcing the sanctions, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent articulated a clear mission. He emphasized the government’s dedicated efforts toward eliminating cartels entirely, insisting the Trump administration will hold these violent entities accountable. Bessent stated, “CDN and its leaders have engaged in a violent campaign of intimidation, kidnapping, and terror, jeopardizing communities on both sides of our southern border.” He added that the government would continue to disrupt their operations, cutting off the critical flow of drugs, weapons, and finances that bolster their violent enterprises.
Paul Perez, commander of the National Border Patrol Council in the South Texas Rio Grande Valley, discussed the impact of these measures. He noted the Trump administration’s enforcement actions have markedly decreased illegal crossings. Nevertheless, the threat from cartels like CDN persists, endangering the lives of American citizens near the border.
Perez explained the sophistication of these criminal organizations. They employ advanced technology, including drones, to carry out their operations. This innovation allows them to operate with a level of efficiency that outpaces many law enforcement efforts.
As Perez pointed out, the cartels have entrenched control over the Mexican border, often acting without fear of reprisal from law enforcement. This lack of accountability allows them to engage in fierce gunfights, with cartel members occasionally fleeing into the United States during conflicts. In such circumstances, they pose a direct threat to American citizens.
The ongoing violence can have devastating consequences. Perez remarked that CDN engages in gruesome activities, such as beheadings and kidnappings, demonstrating a complete disregard for human life.
Perez urges a broader understanding of the cartel’s operations. He elaborated on the similarities between various notorious cartels, including the Sinaloa cartel and CDN. These organizations share a common modus operandi, trafficking not only in drugs but also in human lives. They operate with a singular focus on profit, demonstrating brutal tactics and a willingness to inflict harm on anyone who obstructs their goals.
By targeting the leaders of CDN, the Trump administration aims to create a rift within the cartel, potentially leading to internal strife and diminished operational capacity. According to Perez, such actions will weaken the cartel’s grip on the region, as power vacuums often lead to infighting.
