In his second term, Trump has pursued an aggressive strategy, utilizing executive authority to revoke longstanding government policies. In early April, Trump’s announcement of punitive tariffs sparked a trade war with essential U.S. trading partners, resulting in notable financial market turbulence and increased fears of a recession. Fortunately, the markets have since recovered, aided by a temporary truce between the U.S. and China over tariffs, an outcome that saw Trump easing restrictions.
Despite these rebounds, Trump’s approval ratings on economic measures remain low. The Marquette Law School poll recorded his approval at 37% for tariffs and 34% for inflation or cost of living. In a Reuters/Ipsos poll, his ratings for the economy and cost of living dropped to 39% and 33% respectively.

Doug Heye, a seasoned GOP strategist and former official in the RNC, stated that Trump’s victory in the previous election primarily stemmed from his promise to lower prices. As prices continue to rise, this disconnect appears to be reflected in current polling data.
Shaw pointed out that besides gas prices, there has not been much relief from rising costs, impacting public perception. He remarked on the struggle people face with basic expenses. The question remains whether people will regard the absence of escalating inflation as a win.
As Shaw remarked, to claim economic success, Trump must deliver tangible reductions in prices. The persistent perception of financial strain among voters indicates that economic challenges will continue to shape public opinion.
