In a heartfelt tribute to the upcoming Memorial Day, Disneyland transformed into a hub of patriotism, welcoming a remarkable group of 100 U.S. Navy sailors and Marines. This surprise event coincided with their port call during Los Angeles Fleet Week, offering service members a memorable day at one of America’s most iconic theme parks.
The fortunate service members experienced Disneyland’s beloved attractions, including Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Mickey’s Toontown. The day culminated in a special flag retreat ceremony, beautifully executed alongside the Dapper Dans and the Disneyland Band. Notable guests also included Rear Admiral Richard W. Meyer, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Third Fleet, who expressed his gratitude for the opportunity.
“How many times in your life do you have the opportunity to participate in the events happening at Disneyland, the happiest place on Earth?” Meyer reflected. His excitement was palpable as he shared the day with the public and highlighted the significance of showcasing the Sailors and Marines to the community.
The Walt Disney Company has a rich history of supporting the U.S. military, rooted in the backgrounds of its founders, brothers Walt and Roy Disney, who both served in World War I. Walt drove an ambulance for the Red Cross Ambulance Corps, while Roy dedicated his service as a petty officer in the Navy. This legacy of service resonates throughout the company’s operations and initiatives.
Disneyland has maintained a tradition of daily flag ceremonies for the past 70 years, dating back to the park’s opening in July 1955. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, this tradition prevailed, a point that Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro emphasized in a heartfelt message shared on social media.
“While our world looks very different today, one thing endures: the American flag still flies over Walt Disney World. I’m inspired by how our Security Cast Members continue to raise it each and every morning at Magic Kingdom,” D’Amaro stated. He underscored the flag as a symbol of resilience and safety amidst changing times.
In recognition of military families and their sacrifices, events at Disneyland not only honor active service members but also acknowledge veterans. U.S. Marine Corps veteran Ariel Elias, currently a category manager at Disneyland, shared insights on the company’s long-standing commitment to honoring those who have served.
“Disney truly embraces our veterans, and it’s embedded in the DNA of the Disneyland Resort,” Elias remarked. “You see it everywhere—from the flag retreat to Veterans Day to Fleet Week—it’s always at the forefront of our daily operations.”
Disney’s support extends even further, with dedicated programs aimed at assisting veterans and their families. The Heroes Work Here initiative focuses on hiring, training, and offering support to U.S. military veterans and military spouses. Since 2012, the company has also contributed over $20 million to various organizations that provide crucial assistance to veterans.
The celebration at Disneyland highlights a broader connection between entertainment and military service. Events of this nature foster a sense of community and respect, not only for those who have served but also for their families. This day was not merely about entertaining service members—it represented a deep appreciation for the sacrifices they make for the country.
Moreover, initiatives like those from Disney illuminate the importance of corporate responsibility towards veterans. By embedding military support in their culture, organizations can forge stronger ties with the community and inspire future generations to honor service.
The surprise day at Disneyland will linger in the memories of the attending sailors and Marines, reinforcing their sense of pride and belonging. This kind of engagement reinforces the idea that appreciation for military service goes beyond simple acknowledgment; it encompasses an active effort to celebrate and honor those who dedicate their lives to protecting the nation.
As Memorial Day approaches, events like this serve to remind us all of the sacrifices made by service members. Whether through corporate initiatives or community events, every gesture contributes to a larger narrative of respect, gratitude, and honor for those who have served in the U.S. military.
