Hegseth Challenges China’s Accusations Over Golden Dome Defense Project

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth firmly rejected China’s allegations that the Golden Dome initiative would militarize space, asserting a focus solely on national security.

While departing from a visit to Fort Bragg in North Carolina, Hegseth stated, “All we care about is protecting the homeland.” This remark underscores the U.S. commitment to enhancing its missile defense capabilities amid geopolitical tensions.

President Donald Trump has long emphasized the importance of homeland defense as a pillar of his America First strategy, touting the Golden Dome project as a crucial, generational investment in national security.

In recent statements, Chinese Foreign Minister Mao Ning criticized the Golden Dome, claiming it exhibits a strong offensive posture and violates the principles established by the Outer Space Treaty regarding peaceful use of outer space.

Mao articulated concerns that the project could escalate the risks of transforming space into a battle zone, potentially igniting a space arms race which would destabilize international security and armament control efforts. He urged the U.S. to abandon its plans for the development and deployment of a global anti-missile system.

Earlier this week, Trump, together with Hegseth, shared substantive details about the Golden Dome project. They outlined an ambitious timeline to establish the missile defense shield within a three-year framework, with an estimated budget of $125 billion.

Hegseth also faced scrutiny over his decision to initiate a monthly Christian prayer service at the Pentagon, sparking discussions around religious freedom and the supposed separation between church and state.

“We’ve stated it clearly and proudly. Turning to God for guidance is a longstanding tradition in our military,” Hegseth remarked, referencing historical figures like George Washington who prayed alongside his troops.

In response to criticism aimed at his faith-based initiatives, Hegseth asserted his commitment to openly discussing his reliance on Jesus Christ for wisdom and protection in important matters, stating, “If they want to criticize that, they’re on the wrong side.”

His comments coincided with a motivational address he delivered to the 82nd Airborne Division during their
