A courageous 17-year-old girl, Tilly Hayward, from Peterborough, England, is on a heartfelt mission to explore the world before she completely loses her eyesight due to a rare genetic condition known as Stargardt disease. Reports from SWNS highlight her determination to travel as much as possible despite the limitations posed by her condition.
Stargardt disease affects approximately one in 10,000 individuals and is caused by the accumulation of fatty material on the macula, the vital area of the retina responsible for central vision. Most people diagnosed with this condition retain their peripheral vision; however, Tilly’s situation took a concerning turn last November when she was informed that her peripheral vision was deteriorating.
“The news has put into perspective that life is short,” Tilly expressed, clearly emphasizing the urgency of her situation.
With limited time to cherish her vision, she initiated a fundraiser to support her travels around the globe. Her wish list includes iconic destinations, particularly Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, and the stunning beaches of Dubai.
Born with Stargardt disease, Tilly’s parents unknowingly carry the gene. Family and friends began noticing issues with her sight at an early age, yet opticians initially attributed it to the need for glasses.
It wasn’t until she was seven that she struggled with everyday activities, sometimes sitting too close to the TV to watch her favorite programs. “I began bumping into things,” she recounted, revealing the gradual deterioration of her eyesight.
When her mother sought further assistance, they were misled into believing Tilly had behavioral problems. After undergoing multiple tests, she was officially diagnosed with Stargardt disease at the age of nine, leaving her with no central vision and a distorted peripheral range.
Despite her challenges, Tilly has learned to read Braille and continues to focus on her studies. Scans taken in November 2024 indicated that the disease had further spread into her peripheral vision.
Tilly’s resolve shines through her experiences and reflections. “Until I was 15, I felt embarrassed about being registered as blind. Now, I’ve connected with others and realized that you can still achieve amazing things,” she remarked.
Having traveled to Spain last year, Tilly found joy in the experience despite the difficulty stemming from her condition. “I remember so much more from my previous vacations when my sight was better,” she noted.
Currently, she embraces life fully. “If I can’t see the people or waves on the beach, I’ll listen to them,” she said, demonstrating a unique appreciation for her surroundings.
Tilly has openly discussed her emotional struggles, including battles with depression and anorexia, affirming that she has learned to accept her feelings. “Today, I’ve realized I don’t need to hide how I feel,” she added with conviction.
Having launched a GoFundMe campaign, she has raised £1,490 (approximately $1,850) for her travels, aiming for a target of £2,000 (nearly $2,500). Her ultimate dream is to visit Florida and experience the enchanting world of Disney, particularly the iconic Cinderella Castle.
Tilly’s advice to others facing visual impairments is inspiring. “It may feel like the end of the world, but I’ve grown to realize that a disability shouldn’t disable you. You can adapt and learn to live fully despite your challenges,” she insists.
She envisions standing on the beach, feeling the sand beneath her feet and savoring the sights and sounds of nature one last time. “I would love my family to experience these moments with me,” she expressed.
As she continues her journey, Tilly reminds everyone that hope and resilience can flourish, even in the face of daunting challenges.
The National Eye Institute underlines that while there is no treatment for Stargardt disease, vision rehabilitation assists individuals in maximizing their remaining vision. As Tilly’s story unfolds, it serves as a powerful reminder of courage and determination in the face of adversity.
