Imagine soaring above congested city streets in a sleek, autonomous pod, effortlessly bypassing traffic and reaching your destination faster than ever before. This vision will soon become a reality with the introduction of Whoosh, an innovative urban transit system set to make its debut in 2026.
Whoosh is not your typical gondola or cable car system. While it may bear a resemblance to traditional modes of public transit, this groundbreaking Kiwi invention introduces a unique combination of on-demand service, direct routing, and privacy. Unlike fixed-route gondolas, Whoosh pods are equipped with their own motors and autonomous navigation systems, allowing them to navigate a complex network of cables and rails. This capability enables them to choose the most efficient path from one point to another without any intermediate stops.
The Whoosh system blends the best features of ride-sharing and public transport. Passengers can book a pod through a user-friendly app, similar to calling an Uber. Once booked, the pod waits at a nearby station, ready to whisk riders away to their desired location. Designed to occupy minimal space, these stations can fit into a standard car parking spot and feature a spiral ramp leading to the network, which hovers approximately 40 feet above ground. Larger stations can also be built at ground level to enhance passenger accessibility.
The Whoosh network consists of tensioned cables that span 500 to 985 feet, interspersed with shorter steel rail sections that facilitate smooth turns and junctions. This innovative design allows the system to efficiently navigate geographical obstacles, seamlessly crossing rivers and highways, or even connecting rooftops.
Whoosh pods are expected to achieve average speeds of around 25 mph. While this may not seem exceptionally fast, the non-stop nature of the pods’ journeys often makes them quicker than driving through heavily congested urban areas. Impressively, each ride requires less energy than a 10-minute shower, thanks to the system’s constant motion and low rolling resistance. This efficiency makes Whoosh approximately twice as energy-efficient as a small electric car. Comfort is paramount, as the pods can lean into corners, enhancing the ride experience even at higher speeds. Passengers will also enjoy a unique “floating” sensation during sections of the journey.
Interestingly, Whoosh’s journey began in the amusement park industry. Chris Allington and his team originally developed the technology for a zip line attraction known as the Switchback. This experience allowed them to prototype and test crucial elements of the transit system, including seamless transitions between cables and rails and an eddy current braking system for safe cornering.
The first Whoosh transit system is scheduled to open in Queenstown, New Zealand, in 2026. This stunning tourist destination, surrounded by mountains and a lake, faces significant traffic congestion and limited road networks, making it an ideal testing ground for the innovative transportation solution. Chris Allington emphasized the location’s unique geographical challenges, stating it’s “small enough that it’s actually solvable.” The pilot project will demonstrate Whoosh’s ability to navigate difficult terrain and offer efficient transit in a compact urban environment.
Whoosh combines the convenience of ride-sharing with the efficiency of public transit, offering a modular design and comparatively low infrastructure costs. This makes it an attractive option for cities looking to address congestion and sustainability challenges. As urban areas continue to evolve, Whoosh provides a glimpse into a future where innovative solutions tackle age-old transportation problems.
