Trump Administration Proposes Limits on Iran’s Uranium Enrichment Amid Ongoing Nuclear Negotiations

A recent report reveals that the United States is considering allowing Iran to continue limited low-level uranium enrichment on its territory. The duration of this proposed allowance remains unspecified.

On Saturday, the Trump administration officially submitted its first proposal to Tehran in pursuit of a nuclear agreement. However, specific details about the proposal have not been disclosed to the public. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized, ‘President Trump has made it clear that Iran can never obtain a nuclear bomb.’ She further noted that ‘Special Envoy Witkoff has sent a thorough and acceptable proposal to the Iranian regime, and it is in their best interest to accept it.’

This information comes from a report by Axios, which cited two sources familiar with the ongoing negotiations between the Trump administration and Iran. When contacted for validation, the White House did not dispute the specifics outlined in the Axios article.

Iran’s Reaction to Nuclear Weapons Claims

A White House official addressed the report, describing the deal’s terms as ‘very tough’ and insisting they would prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

The official stated, ‘President Trump is conveying the cold, hard truth. The terms we provided to Iran were stringent and would render it impossible for them to ever obtain a nuclear bomb.’

Reports indicate that Iranian officials plan to reject the suggested deal from the U.S. While the new proposal aims to mitigate some concerns from Iran, it could also provoke dissatisfaction among some Republican lawmakers, as well as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Both have firmly advocated for a deal that incorporates zero nuclear enrichment and the complete dismantlement of Iran’s nuclear program.

Details of the Proposed Nuclear Agreement

The Axios report stated the proposal’s terms would prohibit Iran from constructing any additional enrichment facilities. Iran must dismantle critical infrastructure related to uranium conversion and processing and is required to halt all new research and development on nuclear centrifuges.

However, the proposal also mentions that Iran might engage in a regional enrichment consortium under specific conditions. For instance, Iran would be limited to developing domestic enrichment capabilities solely for civilian applications.

Additionally, upon signing the agreement, Iran would be obliged to reduce its uranium enrichment concentration to 3% and close all underground enrichment facilities for an agreed-upon timeframe.

The proposed agreement also seeks to establish comprehensive auditing and oversight mechanisms to ensure compliance with the outlined rules.

The evolving diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran underscore the complexity of nuclear negotiations and the delicate balance of international relations. As the proposal continues to be discussed, the impacts on regional security and global nuclear non-proliferation efforts remain to be seen.
