Two motorcyclists found themselves in a harrowing situation over the weekend when they collided with a six-foot alligator on a busy highway in Florida. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the incident occurred on Saturday evening around 6:00 PM on Interstate 4 in Volusia County.
The unconventional collision has drawn significant attention, particularly after local news station WOFL in Orlando reported that it spoke exclusively with the involved riders.
Cameron Gilmore, a 67-year-old motorcyclist, suffered a broken foot and several toes when he collided with the alligator. He recounted the moment of impact, stating that he and his riding partner, 25-year-old Brandi Gross, were with a larger group when he noticed a strange object on the road.
Initially, Gilmore mistook the alligator for something much less dangerous, saying, “I thought it was a semi-tire that came off the tread or something.” However, that was far from the reality, as the large creature quickly proved to be a major hazard.
As Gilmore impacted the alligator, he lost control of his motorcycle. He expressed the overwhelming fear and confusion he felt during the incident, saying, “I said, ‘Uh, help me, Jesus.’ And I just kept flipping. I’m like, when is this going to stop?” The traumatic fall ended with him sliding off the road into the grass.
“I couldn’t move much,” Gilmore explained, highlighting the physical toll the event took on him.
Gross, riding directly behind Gilmore, experienced a similar fate. She described the encounter as both shocking and unexpected. “I just seen something, and like, once I realized what it was, it was just too late,” she admitted. The impact left her flipped over, confirming her astonishment at encountering an alligator on the highway.
In the aftermath, Gross reported that she suffered a concussion along with a cracked bone in her wrist. Despite the serious injuries, both riders remain in good spirits.
The well-being of the alligator involved in the collision remains unclear at this time. As authorities continue to investigate the crash, they will gather information regarding the incident’s circumstances and any wildlife management implications.
Despite the seriousness of their injuries, Gilmore and Gross have kept a light-hearted outlook. Gilmore humorously mentioned that he is being referred to as “Gator Gilmore” rather than “Florida man,” embracing the unexpected title that comes with the unusual encounter.
He also acknowledged that he has been called a “Florida man” as well, a nod to the common stereotype associated with amusing and bizarre incidents occurring in the state.
As both motorcyclists begin their recovery, they encourage others to remain vigilant while riding, particularly on roadways where wildlife may unexpectedly cross paths with vehicles.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety, especially in regions known for their wildlife. Riders are urged to stay alert and be prepared for anything on the roadway. Incorporating safety measures, such as wearing appropriate gear and maintaining awareness of their surroundings, can significantly reduce the risk of motorcycling accidents.
Motorcyclists and drivers alike should be aware of potential hazards and make safety a priority during their travels. Such incidents, while rare, highlight the unpredictable nature of both the road and its inhabitants.
As Gilmore and Gross recuperate from their injuries, they exemplify resilience and the capacity to find humor even in trying circumstances. Their encounter with the alligator not only provides a story of survival but also serves as an important reminder for all travelers.
