Duke Tanner Reflects on Clemency from Trump and the Potential for Diddy’s Pardon

Former professional boxer Duke Tanner recalls the harrowing events of his first day in prison in 2004. He witnessed a murder, an experience that profoundly impacted his perspective on survival.

“I watched the guy walk out of the unit, blood seeping from his neck. He collapsed on the floor and ended up dying later,” Tanner shared with Fox News Digital, emphasizing the urgency of the moment.

In that instant, Tanner recognized that he had to adapt to a harsh new reality. He thought to himself, “It’s my new environment. I have to survive. I refuse to become another victim.”

Tanner’s journey to prison began when he was ensnared in a drug trafficking sting while attempting to provide for his family. “Initially, I thought I was being robbed. When I realized the officers were on the scene, I felt a strange sense of peace,” he explained.

Sentenced to two life terms, Tanner’s boxing career came to an abrupt end, and he was separated from his family, including his two-year-old son, for 16 long years. During his incarceration, he dedicated himself to personal growth through Christianity and various rehabilitation programs.

A Life-Changing Dream

In 2018, Tanner had a prophetic dream that prompted him to reach out to President Donald Trump regarding clemency. “I woke up inspired, and I began writing a letter every week to the White House. Two years later, my efforts paid off,” Tanner revealed.

After being denied clemency by former President Barack Obama in 2016, Tanner received a life-changing reprieve from Trump in 2020. In May of that year, he was officially pardoned and had the opportunity to visit the White House to express his gratitude.

“I thanked him in person, and he remembered the details of my case. He acknowledged the challenges I faced, remarking, ‘You had a tough road, but you have a wonderful son. I hear you’re doing great things, so keep up the good work.'” Tanner expressed how those words resonated with him.

Contemplating Diddy’s Pardon

Following Tanner’s pardon, President Trump hinted at the possibility of granting clemency to hip-hop artist Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is currently on trial for serious charges. Tanner admitted he hasn’t closely followed the case and is not in a position to comment on the allegations against Combs.

However, he shared his thoughts on the potential pardon. “This administration will scrutinize every detail. They will dig into the facts. If President Trump decides to move forward with it, that indicates a positive sign, as he’s been through the legal system himself,” Tanner noted, referencing Trump’s recent criminal charges.

He emphasized that the former president understands the complexities of legal battles and the challenges posed by prosecutorial misconduct. Tanner remarked, “He knows how the system can be flawed. He is committed to holding the system accountable.”

Tanner sees Trump’s pardons not just as second chances but as a way to foster accountability within the criminal justice system. “He is showing those involved that they need to do their jobs correctly. If not, he will be there to make a change and hold them accountable,” Tanner explained.

While Tanner is not privy to the details of Diddy’s situation, he firmly believes that there could be substantial reasons behind any potential pardon. “If President Trump is considering it, he’s likely received strong legal counsel and identified issues worth addressing within the case,” he remarked.

Tanner is also aware of many individuals in prison who he believes deserve a chance for clemency. “There are countless men and women who need to be released from the system. I have seen the impact firsthand,” he said.

Responses to Recent Pardons

In the context of recent pardons, Tanner noted that former President Joe Biden granted several controversial pardons, including one for his son, Hunter Biden, shortly before leaving office. Tanner expressed his perspective on the situation. “I heard about Hunter’s pardon. It cannot be compared to my own experience because he was never imprisoned or even charged,” Tanner stated.

Reflecting on his own experience, Tanner said, “I spent 16 years and faced immense loss during that time. No comparison can be made between our situations.” Despite this, he voiced that he holds no resentment concerning Hunter Biden’s situation.
