Drew Carey, the beloved host of The Price is Right, has recently shared a deeply personal story regarding the tragic murder of his former fiancée, Amie Harwick, in 2020. In an exclusive interview with US Weekly, Carey revealed how this devastating event has altered his perspective on love and relationships.
At 66 years old, Carey openly expressed his grief, stating, “I think about her every day. It’s such a loss. Her death still affects me and my ideas about relationships and intimacy.” This confession underscores the emotional turmoil he continues to navigate since Harwick’s passing.
Carey recounted the moments leading up to Harwick’s tragic death. Just a day before her murder, he received a text from her that left him feeling a mixture of hope and sorrow. “Hey, it’s Amie. I’ve been thinking a lot about forgiveness. I would love to get together with you and talk about some things,” she wrote.
Carey recalled his response, affirming his love for her: “I texted her that I loved her and that I’d see her the next week.” Tragically, this reunion would never occur. “The next day she was murdered, and we never got a chance to get together,” he added, highlighting the abrupt end to their story.
Since Harwick’s murder, Carey has struggled to find companionship in his life. He reflected on this difficult journey, stating, “It destroyed me for a while. I still don’t date. I have women I go out with and spend time with, but it’s all platonic.” His commitment to maintaining a respectful distance from romantic relationships has shaped his social interactions since the tragedy.
On February 15, 2020, Harwick was found in her Hollywood Hills apartment after a brutal act of violence. Reports indicated that she had been thrown over her third-floor balcony. Following her screams, police discovered her clinging to life beneath the balcony, marking a horrific loss for all who knew her.
In the aftermath of Harwick’s murder, her ex-boyfriend, Gareth Pursehouse, was charged with her murder and subsequently convicted in September 2023. Carey’s response to this verdict revealed a sense of relief: “I can finally move on since Pursehouse’s conviction. It feels like we’ve all let out a breath and are able to finally move on.” This sentiment speaks to the long-awaited closure that has eluded him since the tragedy.
Despite not being able to formalize their relationship, Carey cherishes the memories of Harwick. Photographs of her still decorate his home, serving as a constant reminder of their bond. “She’s with me always,” he remarked, showcasing the enduring love he holds for her.
In light of Harwick’s untimely death, Carey has encouraged his fans to support domestic violence initiatives. He believes in raising awareness about such critical issues, stemming from personal conviction as well as a desire to honor Harwick’s legacy.
With the legal matters finally settled and a heavy burden lifted from his shoulders, Carey appears to be on a path of healing. His candid discussions about love, loss, and recovery reflect not just his personal journey, but also the universal struggle following trauma.
Caring for oneself while remembering a lost loved one is a delicate balance that many understand. Drew Carey’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the need for compassion and support in our shared human experience.
