Former President Donald Trump expressed his willingness to arrest California Governor Gavin Newsom if his administration obstructs Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations during ongoing riots in Los Angeles.
This statement emerged from a brief interaction with reporters as Trump exited Marine One outside the White House. Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy prompted the discussion, asking Trump if Border Czar Tom Homan should take up Newsom’s challenge to arrest him.
Doocy inquired, “He’s daring Tom Homan to come and arrest him. Should he do it?”
Trump replied, “I would do it if I were Tom. I think it’s great. Gavin likes the publicity. But I do think it would be a great thing. He’s done a terrible job. I like Gavin Newsom. He’s a nice guy, but he’s grossly incompetent. Everybody knows.”
In light of the ongoing upheaval, Trump shared his view that many of the rioters in Los Angeles are not genuine protesters, but rather professional agitators.
He declared, “The people that are causing the problem are professional agitators. They’re insurrectionists. They’re bad people. They should be in jail.”
Governor Newsom promptly responded to Trump’s comments via social media. He stated, “The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor. This is a day I hoped I would never see in America. I don’t care if you’re a Democrat or a Republican this is a line we cannot cross as a nation — this is an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism.”
