Former NFL receiver Golden Tate has finally shed light on the incident involving current Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey that occurred on the field in 2020. This revelation marks the first detailed account since their altercation, and Tate shared his insights during a recent appearance on the podcast “Bussin’ with the Boys,” hosted by former NFL players Taylor Lewan and Will Compton.
While discussing his time with the New York Giants, Tate reflected on the tumultuous events leading to the confrontation with Ramsey. At the time, it was Tate’s final NFL season, wrapping up an impressive 11-year career.
The interpersonal drama between Tate and Ramsey began far before their fateful encounter on the gridiron. Ramsey had a prior relationship with one of Tate’s twin sisters, a relationship that ended when she was pregnant with their second child. Tate expressed his frustrations regarding how his sister was treated.
“Things happened within that relationship where I don’t think my sister was done or treated the way she should have been treated,” Tate recalled on the podcast. “When that happens, who do you think she has to come see? You gotta come see big bro.”
This frustration would later spill onto the field, where the NFL is no stranger to heated rivalries and personal disputes.
In October 2019, the feud intensified when a fan tweeted at Tate regarding a widely circulated picture of Ramsey with his new girlfriend. The fan suggested that Tate should confront Ramsey, to which Tate responded, “He know he gonna have to see me.” This social media exchange hinted at the brewing tension between the two players.
The Giants faced off against the Rams in a low-scoring game on October 4, 2020, with the Rams ultimately winning 17-9. Tate noted that the atmosphere on the field became electric almost instantly. From the first play, Ramsey was aggressively jamming Tate, setting a confrontational tone for the game.
“We get out there, and right away, first one, he’s overly jamming me, and I’m like, ‘OK, this is how we’re going to do this,’” said Tate.
Despite the heated exchanges, he made a conscious decision to refrain from taking penalties that could cost him or his team. “What I do, I cannot cost my team a penalty or cost myself any money, so that’s in my back pocket,” he emphasized.
After the game concluded, the tension between the two players boiled over. Tate approached Ramsey, and the situation escalated rapidly. “The game ends. I run up there to expect it, what’s going to happen? And he come find me,” Tate recalled regarding the moments leading up to the fight. “I knew he was going to swing, so I ducked, and I went to dump him, and the next thing you know, they had everybody on us, so they separated us.”
This altercation involved teammates from both sides as they rushed in to break up the fight, demonstrating how personal disputes can quickly become collective chaos in the highly charged environment of the NFL.
In a separate interview on “The Pivot” podcast back in 2022, Ramsey addressed the conflict, acknowledging the inevitability of their confrontation. “On sight, we knew what we was gonna do. I mean that’s his sister, that’s what he supposed to do, too. But you mind your business, too. This is me, too, now,” he remarked during the discussion.
Fast forward to five years later, and while Tate and Ramsey have not resolved their differences, they have come to an understanding for the sake of their kids. “We haven’t talked, but I think we both kind of have agreed to not be knuckleheads for the betterment of his daughters and my nieces, and that’s kind of where we stand,” Tate said, indicating a matured perspective on their rivalry.
The saga between Golden Tate and Jalen Ramsey highlights the complexities of personal relationships within the competitive framework of professional sports. What began as a personal issue evolved into a notable on-field confrontation, captivating fans and spectators alike.
While rivalries in sports are expected, the emotional undertones can lead players to take actions beyond the game. As Tate and Ramsey navigate their personal lives, they serve as reminders of the human side of sportsmanship.
With the NFL’s competitive nature, fans can anticipate how personal stories may continue to intersect with professional play, shaping the narratives of players both on and off the field.
