El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele has recently proposed a groundbreaking plan to accept illegal immigrants of any nationality facing deportation from the United States. This initiative, aimed at easing the burden on US prisons, would involve booking these individuals in the Salvadoran prison system for a fee.
The proposal follows a significant meeting between Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Bukele at his presidential retreat near San Salvador. During this discussion, Bukele shared his vision to allow the United States to outsource a part of its prison system, suggesting that his country be compensated for housing convicted criminals, including US citizens.
“We have offered the United States the opportunity to outsource part of its prison system,” Bukele stated on social media. He added, “We are willing to take in only convicted criminals into our mega-prison (CECOT) in exchange for a fee. This fee would be relatively low for the US but significant for us, making our entire prison system sustainable.”
Rubio commended the Salvadoran president, stating, “He has agreed to the most unprecedented, extraordinary migratory agreement anywhere in the world.” This statement emphasizes the significance of the collaboration between the two nations as they address immigration challenges.
According to Rubio, the proposed framework would allow the United States to send illegal immigrants currently incarcerated in US facilities directly to El Salvador. Additionally, Bukele offered to accept dangerous criminals who are already serving time in the US justice system, despite their legal status as American citizens or residents.
While the offer includes violent American criminals, legal experts caution that the deportation of US citizens is a complex issue, likely to remain off the table. A US official reiterated that there are no plans under the current administration to deport American citizens, although they acknowledged the proposal’s significance.
This agreement could evolve into a
