A federal judge recently denied California Governor Gavin Newsom’s urgent request for a temporary restraining order aimed at halting President Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops and U.S. Marines to address escalating protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement, commonly known as ICE, in Los Angeles.
U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer, appointed by former President Bill Clinton, ruled against Newsom’s request by 1 p.m. PDT on Tuesday, instead scheduling a hearing for Thursday to review the state’s motion for further action.
Judge Breyer, who has a notable legal background as a former Watergate prosecutor, stated that the federal government must submit its legal arguments by 11 a.m. PDT Wednesday. California’s response to these arguments must be submitted by 9 a.m. Thursday.
Breyer is overseeing the lawsuit initiated by Newsom along with California Attorney General Rob Bonta. The lawsuit specifically challenges Trump’s decision to federalize 4,000 National Guard members and deploy 700 Marines to Los Angeles as part of a response to violent protests.
Newsom has publicly criticized Trump and his administration, accusing the president of illegally commandeering 2,000 members of California’s National Guard without consulting local law enforcement officials.
