Tim Green’s Inspiring Fight Against ALS: A Father-Son Podcast Legacy
Tim Green, a former NFL first-round draft pick and Atlanta Falcons standout, boasts an impressive career that spans various fields. At 61 years old, Green has played eight seasons in the NFL, served as a broadcaster on NFL on Fox, authored nearly 40 books, and practiced law.
In 2018, Green received the life-altering diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as ALS. Despite this challenge, he has continued to expand his multifaceted career.
Launching a Meaningful Podcast
In a heartwarming move, Green and his son, Troy, began a podcast titled “Nothing Left Unsaid.” Following the progression of his condition, Green lost the ability to speak but now utilizes eye-tracking technology and an AI-generated voice to communicate.
Speaking with Fox News Digital, Green described the podcast as one of the most meaningful projects of his life. He emphasized the dual purpose it serves: raising awareness about ALS and creating cherished memories with his son.
“Through each conversation, we showcase not just the challenges we face, but also the love and resilience that can triumph over adversity,” Green shared. “Troy adds his perspective and energy to the discussions. This experience reminds me that there can be joy and purpose even in the most difficult times.”
The Reluctance to Start
Initially, Green hesitated to enter the podcasting world. He questioned whether the world needed another podcast and expressed his reluctance to his son.
“The idea for the podcast came from Troy. At first, I pushed back, thinking it wasn’t necessary. However, Troy persisted, and eventually, I agreed- with the condition that my Christian faith would be honored throughout each episode and that we would raise awareness and funds for ALS,” Green explained.
With this foundation, the podcast became a meaningful space for father and son. Green emphasized that it allows for honest conversations filled with humor and depth, covering topics from life and football to the poignant realities of living with ALS.
A Unique Understanding
Troy, one of Green’s five children, has found the podcast to be an eye-opening experience. It offers him a chance to learn stories about his father that he had never heard before.
“It’s incredible and really fun. My dad is one of the most humble people I know, and often I feel like I learn more about him from others than from him directly,” Troy remarked. “The podcast has also been a platform for awesome guests, allowing me to gain insights about my dad and his experiences.”
Stories from Iconic NFL Players
Troy recounted a memorable episode featuring Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman. During the show, Aikman shared a personal story about a challenging moment in his career.
“At the end of the episode, Aikman took a moment to express his appreciation for my dad, who stood up for him during a difficult game. It’s amazing to hear these stories that my dad never mentioned,” Troy said.
Tim’s Experience Shaping the Podcast
Tim’s background as both a writer and broadcaster greatly informs his approach to podcasting. He believes these experiences have endowed him with crucial skills that enhance each episode.
“As a writer, I learned how to connect with people through storytelling. Broadcasting taught me to communicate clearly and engage listeners,” Tim said. “These skills are vital when creating authentic conversations in podcasting.”
A Mission of Hope
Following his ALS diagnosis, Tim initiated TackleALS, a campaign focused on ALS research funding. The campaign has raised over $10 million to date, emphasizing the urgency of finding effective treatments and, ultimately, a cure.
“Raising over $10 million for ALS research has been humbling. Each dollar moves us closer to answers, a mission driven by hope that can change the future for ALS patients,” Tim noted.
“In that moment of diagnosis, I realized I wanted to transform my circumstances into actionable change. TackleALS has provided me with a purpose beyond my condition and gives voice to others affected by this disease.”
Community and Support
Tim’s work on TackleALS has connected him with a community comprised of researchers, advocates, families, and patients who refuse to give up. He advocates the importance of shared strength in their fight against ALS. Tim notes that he draws inspiration from fellow NFL player Steve Gleason, who has also battled this condition since 2011.
“Steve and his remarkable spirit inspire me every day. I often think, if he can persevere, why can’t I?” Tim shared. “His friendship has become invaluable to me.”
Tim respects the remarkable work of the Gleason Foundation, which provides critical resources that empower ALS patients towards greater independence and dignity.
Family Pride
Despite all his accomplishments, Tim holds his family as his greatest source of pride. He cherishes the life he has built with his wife and their children.
“It may sound cliché, but my greatest pride lies in my family. Anyone who knows me is aware of this. My wife and I have been married for over 36 years, and our children are truly special,” Tim expressed with warmth.
“Our children have achieved great things, and their successes fill me with immense pride.”
A Legacy of Role Models
Troy views his father not only as a parent but also as a role model who embodies strength and humility.
“How fortunate I am to grow up with someone like my dad,” Troy reflected. “Not everyone has the chance to wake up every day around their superhero.”
