Senator John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, and Bill Maher, the host of “Real Time,” expressed concern about the recent unrest in Los Angeles. In a discussion aired on Friday, both figures concluded that the perception of Democrats supporting the anti-ICE protests may ultimately serve to benefit former President Trump, particularly as videos of the chaos circulate across social media platforms.
Maher highlighted that some individuals on the left criticized Fetterman following his condemnation of the violence erupting in Los Angeles. He pointed out that defending the violent protests does not contribute positively to the Democratic Party’s image.

“When people see these images in campaign ads, it will certainly work in favor of Trump,” Maher commented on the visuals emerging from the protests. The stark imagery, in his view, poses a significant risk for the Democratic Party.
Fetterman echoed Maher’s sentiments, acknowledging that many Americans do not wish to witness Los Angeles, a major city, “on fire for the second time in six months.” He raised an important question regarding the influence of such images: “What would people in Scranton think when they see these images and videos?”
Maher further stressed that while Fetterman’s positions on free speech and immigration align with traditional Democratic values, there is increasing discontent from those who label him as insufficiently progressive. He remarked on the ambiguity of current political terminology, stating, “We don’t even know what these terms mean” in today’s polarized environment.
Identifying as an “old-school Democrat,” Maher found common ground with Fetterman, who affirmed that his core values have not changed. However, Fetterman pointed out a significant transformation within the Democratic Party itself. “If you dare to criticize certain trends or behaviors, you risk incurring a political cost,” he warned, emphasizing the challenges politically moderate voices now face.
