Artist Challenges Dodgers’ Decision Over National Anthem Amid LA Protests

Vanessa Hernández, popularly known as Nezza, performed a Spanish version of the United States national anthem at Dodger Stadium on a significant night. Her rendition occurred amidst a backdrop of protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which have stirred unrest in Los Angeles.

The song ‘El Pendón Estrellado’ was sung during a Los Angeles Dodgers game against the San Francisco Giants, and according to Nezza, there were indications from the team that they preferred she stick to the English version.

In a video shared on TikTok, a Dodgers employee informed her, “We are going to do the song in English today.” Nezza highlighted this moment, expressing surprise about the lack of communication regarding language choices.

The same employee also acknowledged uncertainty about whether the team’s preference had been effectively communicated to Nezza. Nevertheless, she decided to perform her own version, citing a need to address the ongoing tensions related to ICE activities in the city.

”I didn’t think there would be any objection,” Nezza stated in a follow-up TikTok video. She pointed out how her performance resonated with the current events in Los Angeles. ”I’ve sung the national anthem many times before, but today was different. I felt compelled to express my feelings. Para mi gente, for my people,” she added.

Fox News Digital attempted to obtain comments from the Dodgers regarding Nezza’s performance and the ongoing protests. However, the organization has not released any official statements concerning the issue.

Amid the rising tensions, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts faced questions about the protests and maintained a neutral position. When pressed for insight, he said, “I honestly don’t know enough to provide an informed opinion.” He stressed that the unsettling nature of deportations and unrest impacts everyone and reaffirmed the need for more understanding of the situation.

The sentiments shared by Roberts contrast sharply with those of Dodgers player Kiké Hernández. Before the game, Hernández took to social media to voice his concern about the protests taking place in the city. He mentioned, “I may not be Born & Raised, but this city adopted me as one of their own.” In a heartfelt message, he expressed his sadness and anger about the current state of affairs, recognizing the community he has grown to love.

Hernández continued, emphasizing the importance of human rights for all individuals. He ended his post with the hashtag #CityOfImmigrants, underlining the importance of inclusivity and respect.
