Former Cincinnati Reds shortstop Zack Cozart recently expressed his dwindling support for Donald Trump as geopolitical tensions rise. Cozart, who backed Trump in the recent 2024 presidential election against former Vice President Kamala Harris, has now drawn a line regarding his loyalty to the former president.
On Monday, Trump made headlines by calling for mass evacuations in Tehran. This statement came as hostilities intensified between Israel and Iran. In response, Cozart took to social media platform X to voice his concerns. He stated, “If Trump gets us in a war, I will no longer support him. I’m sure most of you know I love Trump.” This marked a significant shift in Cozart’s public stance on Trump during a critical moment in world affairs.
Meanwhile, Trump was scheduled to depart the G7 summit in Canada on Monday evening to address the escalating conflict. A spokesperson from the White House, Karoline Leavitt, pointed out that despite the turmoil, Trump had a productive day at the summit, even signing a major trade agreement with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Leavitt stated, “President Trump had a great day at the G7, even signing a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Much was accomplished, but due to the situation in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State.” The urgency of the international situation appears to have compelled Trump to prioritize national security.
As tensions mounted, it was reported that Trump requested the National Security Council to be ready in the situation room upon his return to Washington. This proactive measure suggests a serious concern regarding the potential ramifications of the military situation in the Middle East.
In addition, White House representative Alex Pfeiffer responded to circulating rumors that the U.S. military would be joining forces with Israel to attack Iran. Pfeiffer firmly rejected these claims, asserting, “This is not true. American forces are maintaining their defensive posture, and that has not changed. We will defend American interests.” This reinforces a steadfast commitment to national defense while simultaneously addressing unfounded speculations.
Cozart’s previous support for Trump was vocalized about a year ago, prior to the Republican National Convention. He proclaimed his enthusiasm for voting for Trump, saying, “I dunno about y’all but I can’t wait to vote for Trump… I’ve honestly never seen the party as united as now… they tried to kill our President… at least we can do is VOTE!!” His passionate comments highlight the political fervor that characterized his earlier support.
Cozart has a notable background in Major League Baseball, where he played from 2011 to 2019. Selected in the second round by the Reds in 2007, he also spent the final two years of his career with the Los Angeles Angels. In 2017, he achieved All-Star status after a standout season, hitting 24 home runs, recording 63 RBIs, and finishing with a batting average of .297.
Over his career, Cozart participated in 839 games where he batted .247 with a .300 on-base percentage and a .699 OPS, while accumulating 87 home runs and 305 RBIs. His athletic achievements frequently placed him in the spotlight, and now, his political commentary is drawing equal attention.
As the global landscape continues to shift with ongoing geopolitical tensions, many are eagerly observing how public figures like Cozart navigate their political affiliations. Cozart’s statement reflects a broader unease among some supporters of Trump, indicating that the prospect of military engagement may alter perceptions of leadership and loyalty.
