Yechiel Leiter, Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, has hinted at upcoming developments related to the Jewish State’s conflict with Iran that he claims will overshadow previous military actions against Hezbollah. During a recent television appearance on Merit Street, he stated that recent operations, including the detonation of pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah members in Lebanon and Syria, will appear simplistic by comparison.
Leiter remarked that the audience can expect unexpected turns in the ongoing conflict. He stated, “We’ve pulled off a number of surprises. When the dust settles, you’re going to see some surprises on Thursday night and Friday that will make the beeper operation almost seem simple.” This assertion raises questions about Israel’s strategic plans as tensions continue to escalate in the region.
His comments come on the heels of a series of near-simultaneous detonations orchestrated by Israel on September 17, where pagers belonging to Hezbollah were targeted, resulting in at least 12 fatalities, including two children, and nearly 3,000 injuries across Lebanon and Syria. A day later, the detonation of walkie-talkies claimed an additional 25 lives and left over 600 wounded. U.S. officials later confirmed that Israel had briefed them regarding these operations.
Then-Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized that the United States had no prior knowledge of, nor involvement in, these incidents. This lack of awareness has raised concerns regarding the nature of military coordination between the two nations.
Leiter also utilized social media to communicate Israel’s stance on regime change, posting a video message recorded outside the Situation Room of the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. He clarified, “We are not in the business of regime change.” Instead, he emphasized that Israel’s focus remains on neutralizing the threats posed by Iran’s ballistic missile program and nuclear weaponization efforts.
The ambassador elaborated on recent military actions, noting that Israel has successfully targeted key military assets within Iran. He stated, “Today we continue to peel back the surface-to-surface missile systems that are spread throughout Iran. We’ve reached the point where between a third and a half have been demolished.” The strategic targeting of broadcast centers in Tehran aimed to disrupt the Iranian government’s propaganda efforts.
In his address, Leiter also highlighted concerns regarding civilian safety during military operations. He noted that residents of Tehran were informed to evacuate the vicinity of the broadcast center ahead of the strike, allowing hundreds of thousands to escape danger.
Iran continues to assert that its nuclear program serves peaceful purposes. Both U.S. intelligence agencies and the International Atomic Energy Agency have corroborated this claim, stating that Iran is not pursuing a nuclear weapon. The stark contrast between Iran’s narrative and Israel’s allegations poses ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Leiter expressed his belief that any potential regime change must come from within Iran. He stated, “If the Iranian people rise up and change their regime, that’s their choice.” Furthermore, he indicated that if Israel can play a role in facilitating such change, it would be viewed favorably by history.
Despite ongoing military operations, he noted that Israel’s economy remains robust. “Our economy remains strong and resilient despite the war, and the stock market in Israel once again, for the second day in a row, continued to rise,” Leiter remarked.
In light of the ongoing conflict, Leiter affirmed Israel’s commitment to assist citizens stranded abroad. He expressed a determination to find solutions for individuals wishing to return to their families and roles in society, particularly in the Israeli military. He concluded by thanking supporters and the public for their prayers and encouragement during these challenging times.
