Messiah University Baseball Team Focuses on Faith Instead of Wins, Embarks on Unforgettable Journey to the World Series

This season, college baseball witnessed an inspiring story unfold at Messiah University in Pennsylvania. The Messiah Falcons made an impressive run to the Division III World Series championship game, which took place on June 5. This season stands as one of the most remarkable in the team’s history.

For Coach Phillip Shallenberger and his squad, the primary objective shifted from traditional goals of athletic success to a deeper calling toward spirituality. Instead of aiming for national accolades, the players prioritized their faith.

Pitcher Daniel Knight shared insights with Fox News Digital regarding this transformation. He remarked that the team’s focus shifted from pursuing a national championship to encouraging each other to become better Christians.

After struggling with a 1-6 start to the season, the players and coaching staff reassessed their priorities. The team no longer convened with the explicit goal of winning ballgames. They redirected their efforts toward serving their faith, emphasizing spiritual growth over competition.

A Shift in Focus

Shallenberger recounted how practice sessions changed dramatically during this pivotal moment. The team’s previous routine revolved around extensive scouting of opponents’ techniques and crafting strategies. However, they transitioned to spending more time immersed in scripture.

He explained that the coaching staff leaned more towards devotional sessions rather than stat-tracking. This change coincided with an improvement in their performance on the field.

One unconventional training method involved players carrying 250-pound crosses as part of their workouts. Shallenberger integrated this exercise into their routine during crucial conference matchups, pushing players physically while reinforcing their spiritual message.

Significant Turnaround

Daniel Knight experienced a personal awakening through these new practices. During a workout session that involved cross-carrying, he pitched eight and a third shutout innings against Eastern, achieving nine strikeouts.
