Recent polling data reveals significant voter skepticism regarding President Joe Biden’s mental fitness. Many citizens perceive a lack of transparency from the Biden administration about his cognitive decline, prompting calls for congressional investigations into the issue.
A newly conducted Fox News survey shows that 52% of respondents deem it crucial to investigate the alleged use of an autopen by Biden’s advisors without his consent. However, 46% of voters believe it’s time to move on from these discussions.
House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer is actively pursuing investigations into former Biden administration officials. He aims to uncover potential efforts to conceal information about Biden’s mental decline and their use of an autopen for presidential directives.
The survey indicates a split among voters concerning whether Biden’s advisors should face scrutiny for making significant decisions on his behalf. Approximately 50% advocate for an investigation, while 49% support moving on. Interestingly, a majority of respondents, 55%, oppose probing into whether advisors concealed Biden’s cognitive struggles, as just 44% support such inquiries.
Among Democrats, only about 20% endorse investigating the potential cover-up, while around 25% express similar feelings about the use of the autopen for essential presidential decisions. This sample illustrates a varied perception of the administration’s actions and the impact of Biden’s mental fitness on governance.
Overall, 68% of voters believe that the Biden administration previously misled the public regarding his cognitive condition. This distrust spans political affiliations, with 52% of Democrats, 75% of Independents, and 81% of Republicans agreeing that voter misinformation occurred.
Voters apparently show awareness of Biden’s cognitive issues, with nearly 70% stating they recognized the decline prior to his notably poor debate performance in June 2024. More specifically, 28% were aware of his struggles soon after he assumed office, while 21% stated they began noticing a decline a couple of years into his presidency. Another 19% identified the decline as he embarked on his re-election campaign and 20% after the contentious debate with Donald Trump. Less than 10% believe he has not suffered any cognitive decline.
The sentiment regarding Biden’s mental capacity aligns with earlier polling data gathered throughout his presidency. For instance, a Fox News survey conducted in November 2021, shortly after Biden’s inauguration, showed that 53% of respondents felt his age adversely influenced his presidential duties. This sentiment has intensified since, with 57% of voters in the 2022 midterms asserting that Biden lacked the mental capability to serve, which escalated to 65% by July 2024.
Daron Shaw, a Republican pollster working with Fox News, indicates that many voters were already cognizant of Biden’s cognitive challenges long before they materialized as a central topic during the presidential debates. He notes that the revelation of Biden’s declining reputation is steadily taking a toll on his legacy as the reality of his administration’s history unfolds.
As public perception continues to shift, Biden’s favorability ratings have significantly deteriorated, now underwater by 13 points, with only 43% of voters expressing a favorable view compared to 56% unfavorable. This rating marks a sharp decline from earlier in his presidency, where he enjoyed a net positive favorability rating of 10 points during April 2021.
Currently, only 75% of Democrats maintain a positive perception of Biden, a drastic drop from 95% four years prior. This trend showcases a waning support base, reflecting increasing concerns among voters about the president’s mental acuity.
The Fox News survey was conducted from June 13 to June 16, and it included responses from a representative sample of 1,003 registered voters. The data collection process involved live interviews with both landline and cellphone users and an online component for respondents who received a text invitation. The margin of error for the full sample is approximately ±3 percentage points, with higher margins for subgroup results. The poll utilized weights based on age, race, education, and geographic factors to represent the registered voter population accurately.
This nuanced understanding of voters’ concerns and sentiments toward Biden’s mental fitness is crucial in interpreting broader political dynamics as the country heads toward crucial elections.
In summary, the ongoing scrutiny of President Biden’s cognitive fitness and the administration’s transparency regarding this issue will likely shape voter sentiment as the political landscape evolves.
