Survivors of Deadly Attack Detail Harrowing Experience as Minnesota Lawmaker is Murdered

The Minnesota state senator who narrowly escaped a horrific attack last weekend has shared a startling account of how he and his wife were shot a combined 17 times, just moments before the alleged gunman took the lives of another lawmaker and her husband.

In a poignant statement, state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, provided new insights into their survival during a terrifying ordeal that unfolded in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The accused assailant, Vance Luther Boelter, 57, targeted multiple homes that night, fatally shooting Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, before he was apprehended days later following an extensive manhunt.

Chilling Details of the Attack

The Hoffmans recounted their evening prior to the attack, where they had attended a Democratic fundraising dinner with their daughter, Hope. They were asleep in their home in Champlin when, around 2 a.m., Boelter began pounding on their door and shouting.

Boelter posed as a police officer, escalating the situation the moment they opened the door. In a harrowing moment, the couple faced the gunman together. John initially lunged at Boelter, who pointed his weapon directly at him, sustaining nine gunshot wounds.

As John fell, Yvette instinctively reached out to push the assailant and managed to close the door, but not before she was struck eight times by gunfire herself. Their daughter Hope exhibited extraordinary courage, securing the door and calling 911 to report that her father had been shot during what seemed to be a politically motivated attack.

Bravery in the Face of Terror

The quick thinking and bravery displayed by the Hoffmans have drawn admiration and attention. Immediately after the incident, both were rushed to the hospital, where John remains in critical but stable condition, while Yvette was treated and released days later.

Neighboring Lawmakers Targeted

After the shocking assault on the Hoffmans, Boelter went on to target additional lawmakers’ residences. He approached another lawmaker’s home at approximately 2:25 a.m., but found it unoccupied as the representative was on vacation.

Minutes later, Boelter arrived at the home of State Sen. Ann Rest in New Hope. A police officer present interacted with him, but he managed to leave the scene safely. However, around 3:30 a.m., Boelter reached the Brooklyn Park home of Speaker Hortman, where he committed the unthinkable.

Law enforcement arrived shortly after, but Boelter fired upon them, prompting a brief exchange of gunfire before he fled the scene.

A Community in Mourning

This series of violent events has sent shockwaves throughout Minnesota, with the Hoffmans paying tribute to their friends, the Hortmans. They expressed deep sorrow at the loss of two people they cherished and described their bond with the Hortman family.

“We are heartbroken to know that our friends Melissa and Mark Hortman were assassinated,” their statement read. “Our daughter Hope and Sophie Hortman went to school together, and we know that they will support each other as we all navigate the aftermath of that tragic night.”

The couple lamented the harsh reality of public service in today’s climate, where differing opinions can lead to violence. “As a society, as a nation, as a community, we must work together to cultivate civility and ensure a peaceful coexistence. The future for our children depends on our collective effort,” they insisted.

Legal Proceedings Underway

In the meantime, Vance Luther Boelter faces severe legal repercussions. He has been charged federally with two counts of stalking, two counts of murder using a firearm, alongside two additional firearm-related counts. Additionally, he faces second-degree murder charges in Hennepin County, where prosecutors intend to pursue first-degree murder charges.

Upon searching his vehicle, authorities discovered multiple firearms, including assault-style rifles and significant ammunition. Investigators also found notebooks listing more than 45 Minnesota elected officials, which included the name of the deceased, Speaker Hortman.

Unanswered Questions

While the investigation unfolds, police have yet to determine a specific motive behind Boelter’s actions. However, documents indicate he possessed strong anti-abortion sentiments and held opposition to pro-choice political figures.

Boelter remains in federal custody, awaiting a court hearing scheduled for June 27. Investigators continue their efforts to piece together the full scope of that violent night.

Community Vigil

In a show of solidarity, hundreds gathered outside Minnesota’s Capitol to honor the memory of the Hortmans. This tragic event has underscored the risks faced by public servants and ignited conversations around political violence and community safety.

As the Hoffmans continue their recovery process, they highlight the importance of fostering a safe and civil environment for those in public service.
