Archaeologists have unveiled remarkable artifacts hidden beneath the floor of a historic monastery in Poland, providing a fascinating insight into monastic life during the 18th century. Unveiling Rare Artifacts

After dismantling the wooden floors on the monastery’s upper level, archaeologists found hundreds of fragments of rare heraldic tiles hidden in the fill. These tiles were unique because they showcased exceptional craftsmanship.

Officials noted that the tiles were glazed in green and brown hues and were specifically crafted with significant symbolism, including a bishop’s coat of arms and titles.

Current Efforts in Archaeological Research

Work is ongoing to inventory, reassemble, and study these extraordinary artifacts. Historians estimate that the tiles date back to between 1711 and 1730, suggesting a time of great historical relevance.

Designed to fit a stove, the tiles exhibit distinctive shapes and dimensions. One of the reconstructed tiles featured a faceplate shaped similarly to a square, measuring 25.8 cm x 25 cm x 9.5 cm in height. Another tile measured 24.5 cm on each side, with a height of 7.8 cm.

Thefaceplates also proudly displayed initials, including those of Józef Lewicki, who served as the monastery’s superior before becoming the bishop of the Chełm Eparchy in 1711.
