US-Israel Relations Strengthen, But Hamas Remains Unfazed

Former President Donald Trump’s recent statements signal a significant shift in Washington’s approach toward Israel and the Middle East. At a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he proposed a bold plan for the U.S. to take control of the Gaza Strip, asserting that it would lead to a comprehensive reconstruction of the area.

“The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too. We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous, unexplored bombs and weapons on the site, leveling the area and creating an economic development plan that offers countless jobs and housing for the local population,” Trump stated during the conference.

Challenges in the Aftermath of Hamas Attacks

Nearly 16 months after the surprise Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, Israel continues to grapple with the repercussions of the violence while combating the militant organization controlling Gaza. As the war progresses, questions arise about the future leadership of Hamas and what that means for the region.

Trump’s recent declaration provides a new perspective for the Israelis, who have long awaited clarity on the potential outcomes of the conflict. Even prior to officially taking office, Trump’s stern warnings seemed to impact Hamas, resulting in the organization’s first hostage releases since November 2023.

Aligning Interests Between Jerusalem and Washington

Academic and political experts observe a renewed alignment between Jerusalem and Washington, highlighted by Netanyahu’s upcoming visit to Washington, marking him as the first foreign leader invited to the White House since the election. Asaf Romirowsky, Executive Director of Scholars for Peace in the Middle East, elaborated that this reflects a cooperative approach.

“The Trump administration is making headway in discussions surrounding hostages, and part of the agenda in D.C. will likely include strategies for resuming military action against Hamas,” Romirowsky explained.

Despite the recent positive developments concerning hostages, Romirowsky raises concerns about the actual deterrence of Hamas. He notes, “Hamas has historically not been influenced by U.S. governmental pressure and will persist with its agenda through intermediaries like Qatar. Nonetheless, Israel appears to be receiving the military support required, and we hope it continues as related to the war in Gaza and the broader Middle East context.”

The Abraham Accords and Future Relationships

President Trump previously initiated the Abraham Accords, aimed at fostering peaceful ties between Arab nations and Israel. Countries involved include the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco, and there is speculation about a potential agreement with Saudi Arabia.

Romirowsky believes that expanding the Accords remains a key objective, particularly concerning Saudi relations. He highlights the security concerns shared by both nations regarding Iran as a crucial factor in fostering these ties.

Impact of the UN and Human Rights Discussions

Before his recent meeting with Netanyahu, Trump signed an executive order to halt U.S. engagement with the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Amid reports of UNRWA staff’s involvement in the October 7 attacks, the Biden administration subsequently cut funding to this agency.

Additionally, freed hostage Emily Damari revealed that she was held in UNRWA facilities, where she claimed Hamas denied her medical care after sustaining injuries from gunfire.

During the press conference with Netanyahu, Trump labeled the UNHRC as “antisemitic,” mirroring his stance when he withdrew from the council during his initial presidential term. In contrast, the Biden administration restored U.S. participation in the contentious organization in 2021.

Looking Ahead: The Future of US-Israel Relations Amid Uncertainty

The unfolding dynamics between the U.S. and Israel are undoubtedly intriguing as both nations address shared priorities and regional challenges. While strengthening diplomatic ties may yield positive outcomes, the persistent influence of Hamas poses questions about the effectiveness of these strategies in achieving long-term peace and stability.

As discussions continue and policies evolve, the commitment to engaging with all facets of the conflict will determine the trajectory of peace in the Middle East. Observers remain hopeful that new approaches can lead to resolutions that benefit both Israelis and Palestinians in a region fraught with potential unrest.
