Media Oversight: Major Networks Overlook Crucial Senate Hearing on Biden’s Fitness for Office

The portrayal of congressional hearings in mainstream media often hinges on political alignment. Typically, hearings organized by Democrats are broadcast prominently, receiving urgent and serious coverage. In contrast, hearings initiated by Republicans frequently fail to garner the same attention, especially when the topics threaten to challenge the Democratic narrative.

On June 18, a significant hearing convened by the Senate Judiciary Committee aimed to assess former President Joe Biden’s capacity to fulfill his duties as president. Despite concerns about his mental acuity post-debate, which led Democrats to withdraw him from the presidential race, Biden remained in office. This situation quickly became a point of contention, yet many media outlets largely ignored these discussions.

At the outset of the hearing, Senator John Cornyn from Texas remarked on the conspicuous absence of Democratic colleagues, expressing that their boycott appeared to signify an acknowledgment of accountability concerning the crisis surrounding Biden’s mental fitness.

Both Senators Peter Welch and Dick Durbin, representing the Democratic Party, attended only briefly, referring to the proceedings as a political stunt. This dismissal by key Democratic figures coincided with a noticeable absence of coverage from major broadcast networks, which seemed systematically aligned with Democratic objectives.

The strategic boycott by Democrats seemed designed to convey the message that a lack of bipartisan participation rendered the hearing insignificant. This tactic recalls the House Special Committee on the events of January 6, which was heavily criticized for its one-sided approach led by then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. By handpicking members who wholly supported her position, Pelosi ensured a narrative that overshadowed any dissenting viewpoints.

During the recent hearing, former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer criticized the media for its apparent neglect of Biden’s performance issues. According to him, the media’s focus on sensationalist topics while disregarding significant political concerns undermines public trust. Spicer highlighted that a leadership crisis can indeed signify a constitutional crisis if uncertainties about decision-making ability arise.

Media Coverage Focuses Elsewhere

In stark contrast to the Senate hearing, major evening news programs dedicated significant airtime to the not-guilty verdict of Karen Read, who was retried in Massachusetts for homicide allegations. NBC Nightly News allotted five full minutes to this story, while ABC’s World News Tonight provided a similar length of coverage, ultimately diverting attention from the critical discussions concerning Biden.

On PBS, the
