Determining the exact number of deaths linked to illegal immigration in the United States proves to be challenging. However, the tragic cases of victims such as Laken Riley remind us of the critical conversations surrounding border security. The question on many minds is how many American lives have already been saved due to President Trump’s border security measures.
It is often the case that responsible actions go unrecognized, especially when the focus is on negatives that did not occur. In this instance, however, we must draw attention to the significant achievements at the Rio Grande.
Around the country, people gather for cookouts and bowling, unaware that their safety might be the result of Trump’s policies. The numbers reflecting these changes are astonishing, almost surreal. In May 2024, the number of illegal migrants released into the U.S. reached an alarming figure of 62,000. More recently, that figure has dropped to zero.
Moreover, during the previous administration, daily encounters at the southern border frequently exceeded 10,000. In a remarkable shift, just last Sunday recorded a mere 95 encounters, the lowest number ever documented within a 24-hour period.
This dramatic decrease signifies a critical transition from a crisis situation that overwhelmed the nation with illegal immigration and fentanyl influx. Trump’s administration has executed one of the most comprehensive and rapid crisis responses in the history of American governance.
Had Vice President Kamala Harris held the reins during this period, a million undocumented immigrants could have crossed the border. Such a scenario raises alarming concerns regarding the potential influx of gang members, rapists, and deadly quantities of fentanyl.
It is important to address the myths perpetuated about the feasibility of enforcing border control measures. Critics claimed that such actions required Congressional approval, adding to the narrative of impossibility spun by the Biden administration.
Looking back, we see that not only was Trump’s administration effective in curtailing illegal immigration, but earlier presidencies including those of Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton struggled to grasp the complexities of the situation.
Despite the evident benefits of border security, certain industries such as agriculture and hospitality depend heavily on undocumented labor. With estimates of 10 to 20 million undocumented individuals already residing in the U.S., further immigration remains unnecessary.
Importantly, ongoing deportations have received consistent support from public opinion, underscoring their role in enhancing border security. Observing the arrests of those attempting to cross unlawfully discourages further attempts.
Deportations effectively diminish the allure that draws migrants to the U.S. By halting the controversial catch-and-release policy, Trump has allowed border agents to refocus on genuine security enforcement rather than merely processing entries.
According to the Center for Immigration Studies, fentanyl seizures at the southern border have plummeted by 50% since November. This significant decline results from reduced numbers of illegal crossings that previously obscured drug smuggling activities.
With fewer fentanyl shipments entering the U.S., the result is a decrease in overdose fatalities. This positive outcome is one that should receive bipartisan support. Americans can be somewhat unsure of how to react to the considerable success achieved in border control under Trump’s leadership.
With a more secure border, accompanied by self-deporting individuals and the removal of violent criminals, we can expect a notable reduction in the number of grieving families afflicted by senseless violence and loss.
Just six months into his new term, Trump’s effective border policies contribute to the safety of all Americans across the political spectrum. The situation following the 2020 election, which led to a surge in illegal immigration, should serve as a reminder of the importance of secure borders.
As we reflect on these developments, let us recognize the necessity of maintaining a strong border policy and affirmatively state that we will not revert to the vulnerabilities of the past.
