Model and media personality Camille Kostek recently unveiled the less glamorous facets of dating in the world of professional sports. The Sports Illustrated model, now 33, opened up about experiencing judgment from other wives of NFL players for her decision not to marry her long-term boyfriend, former NFL tight end Rob Gronkowski, who is 36 years old.
Kostek expressed her feelings on a recent episode of Kristin Cavallari’s reality program, Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour. She candidly said, “I felt like I was seen as a lesser-than girlfriend because I didn’t have a ring on my finger.” Such statements reveal the pressures partners of professional athletes can face, especially when navigating societal expectations regarding marriage.
Interestingly, Kostek pointed out a specific individual who seemed to judge her the harshest for not wearing an engagement ring. “The woman that’s coming to mind who judged me the most is actually divorced,” she disclosed, highlighting an ironic twist in the judgments passed by others.
Kostek and Gronkowski first crossed paths in 2013 when she was a cheerleader and he was entering his third season with the New England Patriots. Their romantic relationship, which formally began in 2015, has endured various trials and shifts, including a brief breakup in 2017. Reflecting on this period, Kostek admitted, “I think some of the best things that changed the trajectory of my life came from this breakup that broke me but also allowed me to get in the zone. I didn’t care about dating. I felt like I was asexual.”
After experiencing the emotional turmoil of their breakup, Kostek used that time to focus on her own aspirations. “In that year, I decided to audition for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, which was on my bucket list,” she noted. Her story serves as an inspiration, emphasizing the importance of pursuing one’s dreams despite personal challenges.
The term WAG, which stands for Wives and Girlfriends, categorizes partners of athletes. Kostek reflected on the societal expectations that accompany being identified as a WAG, stating that aligning one’s identity with a partner’s professional label can be limiting.
In a conversation with Fox News Digital, Kostek shared another intriguing aspect of her relationship with Gronkowski. “There is that rule where you cannot date the players,” she explained, admitting that she broke this rule to pursue her romance with him. She humorously noted that she kept their relationship under wraps for a time, but ultimately found it worthwhile.
Kostek and Gronkowski maintain a busy lifestyle, often needing to coordinate their schedules. Kostek shared a humorous anecdote about how they manage their time apart. “We read our calendars to each other,” she revealed with a laugh. Despite not spending every moment together, they prioritize communication and often share their schedules to stay connected.
During one such conversation, they coordinated their plans surrounding important events. “It was my sister’s wedding in St. Thomas,” she recounted. Both had exciting commitments lined up; Kostek had the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit launch, while Gronkowski planned to record a podcast in New York. “He said, ‘Perfect, I have a podcast to record in New York. I’ll be there for your event,’” she recalled, illustrating their teamwork in navigating their careers and personal lives.
Kostek’s experiences shed light on the broader issues faced by partners of athletes, particularly around the societal pressure regarding marriage and public perception. While her journey with Gronkowski has brought many achievements, it has also involved grappling with expectations from others.
As she continues to pursue her career and navigate her relationship, Kostek remains a figure of inspiration for many. Her candid comments about judgment and the quest for self-fulfillment resonate with anyone seeking to define their path amid external pressures.
In sharing her story, Kostek highlights the ongoing conversation about the roles partners play in relationships found within the high-stakes world of professional sports. The lessons learned from her experience offer valuable insights into the importance of self-awareness and self-advocacy in any partnership.
