In a significant escalation of military action, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Lt. Gen. Dan “Razin” Caine addressed the press from the Pentagon early Sunday. They detailed the U.S. military’s recent successful strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities, emphasizing the operation’s efficiency and intended impact.
“On President Trump’s orders, U.S. Central Command executed a precision strike overnight on three nuclear facilities in Iran: Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan. The objective was to destroy or severely degrade Iran’s nuclear capabilities,” Hegseth announced during the briefing.
He lauded the operation, terming it “an incredible and overwhelming success.” Hegseth highlighted the focused nature of the order received from the President, reiterating that the operation did not target Iranian military personnel or civilians.
The press briefing followed President Trump’s national address, which took place shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday. In his speech, he asserted the strikes demonstrated the strength of U.S. alliances and military capability.
“As President Trump has stated, the United States does not seek war. However, let me be clear: we will act decisively if our interests or safety are threatened,” Hegseth reiterated. This statement served to underline the seriousness with which the U.S. government views its commitments to national and international security.
Caine described the operation, known as “Operation Midnight Hammer,” as one involving an array of advanced military resources. The strategy included the use of submarines and dozens of Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles, along with the longest B-2 bomber mission since 2001.
“At approximately 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, a U.S. submarine launched more than two dozen Tomahawk missiles targeting critical infrastructure in Iran, just before the strike package entered Iranian airspace. Several deceptive tactics were employed to mask our true intentions,” Caine elaborated.
During his address, Trump disclosed that B-2 stealth bombers executed strikes against Iran’s primary nuclear sites. He stated that five to six bunker-buster bombs were used at the Fordow facility, highlighting the strategic importance of the target.
Reports indicate that the Isfahan facility’s underground construction necessitated careful planning and intelligence to ensure successful strikes. Meanwhile, approximately 30 Tomahawk missiles were launched from U.S. submarines targeting both Natanz and Isfahan.
Following the strikes, Trump addressed the nation from the White House, accompanied by key figures including Vice President JD Vance and Hegseth. He stated that Iran’s nuclear facilities had been “obliterated,” framing the action as a critical step in reducing threats from the nation.
He declared, “The bully of the Middle East must now make peace. Failure to do so will result in even greater consequences.” The President relayed a strong message regarding U.S. resolve against Iranian aggression, reinforcing America’s commitment to its allies, particularly Israel.
Trump’s administration had previously urged Iran to negotiate on its nuclear program. However, following Iran’s withdrawal from proposed talks scheduled for mid-June in Oman, tensions escalated. Israel’s pre-emptive strikes on June 12 were a response to intelligence indicating advances in Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
“A short while ago, the U.S. military executed precision strikes on three pivotal nuclear facilities belonging to the Iranian regime,” Trump noted in his speech. He emphasized the long-term objective of ending Iran’s capacity for nuclear enrichment and addressing the security threats posed by its actions.
Trump’s decisive military action has received a mixed response from lawmakers. While some in Congress praised the administration for taking protective measures against Iran, others criticized the lack of Congressional approval for such operations, afraid of potential escalation into broader conflict.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has yet to respond to the strikes, while Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed skepticism regarding the prospects for diplomacy following the military actions. He noted that previous negotiations had been undermined.
As part of this evolving crisis, Araghchi confirmed plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, illustrating Iran’s intent to strengthen strategic partnerships amid heightened tensions.
With these recent military operations, the global landscape surrounding U.S.-Iran relations remains uncertain. Increased tensions could lead to unintended consequences, particularly in the context of regional stability.
As both nations navigate this precarious situation, the international community watches closely. The long-standing complexities of U.S.-Iran relations may shape upcoming discussions and actions in the geopolitical arena.
