Princess Diana’s Fashion Revolution: The Designer Who Acknowledged Her Bold Choices

Princess Diana consistently challenged royal fashion norms, embodying the spirit of a free woman determined to express herself. As the anticipated auction titled ‘Princess Diana’s Style & A Royal Collection’ approaches, excitement grows among fashion enthusiasts. Set to take place on June 26 in Los Angeles, the event will showcase the creative work of designer Jacques Azagury, featuring his design illustrations and fabric swatches from some iconic gowns worn by Diana.

Azagury, who played a significant role in transforming Diana’s wardrobe during her later years, recently shared his thoughts on her impact and legacy with Fox News Digital during a private preview at The Peninsula Residences in London. He remarked, “It’s wonderful to keep her memory alive. Anything I can do to carry on the princess’s legacy, I will always do it… It’s about keeping her spirit alive.”

A Meeting That Changed Everything

The first encounter between Azagury and Diana occurred in 1985 when he was showcasing a new collection in London. Anna Harvey, the deputy editor of British Vogue, facilitated their introduction. Azagury recalls, “She immediately put me at ease. She had this amazing ability to make you feel completely comfortable in no time.” This warmth encouraged him to help her break free from her initial style constraints.

As Azagury notes, Diana’s fashion evolved dramatically during their collaboration. “In her later years, she embraced a sexier, sleeker look, which was my aim,” he explained. His goal was to simplify her wardrobes, steering her away from frills and frumpy skirts. He believed that as Diana’s life progressed, her fashion choices should reflect her status on the international stage. Over time, her outfits transitioned from extravagant designs to more streamlined fits that emphasized her elegance.

A Shift in Fashion and Identity

British royals have traditionally adhered to strict fashion guidelines, particularly women. As the future king’s spouse, Diana faced immense pressure to conform. However, amidst the public turmoil of her marriage, she sought to send a new message through her style choices.

One unforgettable dress moment is famously known as “The Revenge Dress.” Designed by Christina Stambolian, this striking black number made headlines in 1994 when Diana wore it on the same evening her ex-husband Prince Charles admitted to infidelity during a television interview. Reports suggest she owned the dress for three years before finally revealing it, citing its daring nature.

After separating in 1992, Diana and Charles’s divorce concluded in 1996. It was during this transformative decade that Azagury began crafting what is now referred to as “The Famous Five” collection, designed to showcase Diana’s newfound freedom and confidence.

Fashion as a Form of Liberation

“This is the period when we saw the Diana we all adored, liberated from her marriage,” Azagury reflects. His designs empowered Diana to express her individuality, allowing her the freedom to wear what resonated with her personal style.

In creating those iconic looks, Azagury enabled Diana to break from conventionality. “She moved away from royal protocol on dress lengths, a subtle act of rebellion,” he continued. “It wasn’t overt, but it was her way of declaring herself an independent woman.”

When Fashion Requests Clash with Tradition

Despite Azagury’s commitment to Diana’s vision, not all of her fashion requests were met. He recalls one specific instance where she expressed a desire for shorter dresses. “She surprised me just once,” he stated. “She wanted to go super short on the blue dress from June 1997. We declined, explaining that as much as we wanted to accommodate her, she still needed to remain a princess.”

Diana’s color choices also sparked discussions surrounding royal fashion etiquette. Black, often reserved for mourning in royal circles, became one of her favorite hues. The late princess frequently donned low-cut, figure-hugging dresses that paraded her physique and confidence.

Azagury created a vibrant red silk two-piece dress that was quintessentially Diana. The ‘Washington’ dress from 1997, adorned with a deep back cut, represented a pivotal moment in her fashion narrative.

A New Chapter After Marriage

“After her marriage ended, Diana’s self-image transformed profoundly,” Azagury noted. “She exuded a newfound freedom, wearing colors and styles previously restricted to her.” The first black dress he designed post-marriage became emblematic of her bold reclamation of identity, serving as a statement of self-confidence.

From the very first dress following her Martin Bashir interview, Diana signaled a major shift. “This was her declaration: This is me, the new me,” Azagury stated. Each design became a significant representation of her evolving identity.

Designing Under Pressure

As one of the most photographed women globally, Diana’s outfits needed to be flawless. Azagury emphasized, “As a designer, ensuring every detail was perfect was critical. With 500 photographers capturing her every move, there was no room for error.”

He noted the meticulous challenges involved in creating her dresses. “We never experienced mishaps, as my role was to eliminate any risk of embarrassment for her.” His commitment to perfectionism shaped their stylistic partnership.

A Lasting Legacy

Among Azagury’s renowned designs is the full-length black dress dubbed the “Final Goodbye” dress, characterized by a plunging neckline and high front slit. Fitted just before her fateful trip to Paris, it was meant to outshine others at its debut. Tragically, Diana never wore it.

However, the impact of her legacy remains strong. Azagury affirms, “Princess Diana continues to influence fashion significantly, shaping the styles of contemporary royals and inspiring countless designers.” He observes that whenever new royals wear fashions reminiscent of Diana, comparisons will always arise in the media.

Furthermore, Azagury asserts that many designs from Diana’s era possess a timeless quality. “The dresses I created for her could seamlessly fit into today’s fashion landscape. There’s a depth to her style sense that continuously resonates,” he concluded.
