In his post-game remarks, Schnall stated, “If you watch the video, you’ll see a person charged in aggressively, tripping over Campos’ foot and tumbling down in front of a crowd of 25,000. That person then issues a two-game suspension while alleging ‘bumping the umpire.’ There was no bump. I shouldn’t be held responsible for another grown man’s lack of coordination. This situation has escalated unnecessarily just because I defended myself against the claim.”

He continued, “If that sort of behavior justifies an ejection, we would see many more players and coaches thrown out of games. As umpires, a fundamental part of your job is to manage the game with composure, maintaining some level of tolerance.”

The NCAA Responds to the Incident

The NCAA stated that Schnall was engaging in arguments about balls and strikes, and this contention was captured on the game’s broadcast. The organization confirmed that a warning had been issued prior to the ejection. This warning, however, was not acknowledged by Schnall at the time.

Following LSU’s victory in Game 2, Schnall’s suspension is set to begin in the 2026 season. The NCAA clarified that Schnall, along with first-base coach Matt Schilling, participated in what was described as “prolonged arguing,” a situation that typically leads to a two-game suspension for coaches. Schilling is expected to face a three-game suspension, three games stemming from a combination of the ejection and the extended dispute with officials.

“As a head coach, I believe it is my right to demand clarity on why we were warned,” said Schnall. “At 48 years old, I shouldn’t be shooed away by another adult. When I approached the umpire, I was informed that the warning stemmed from arguing balls and strikes, which I contested due to missed calls. After that exchange, I found myself ejected. If my conduct warranted such a response, I would gladly stand here and apologize.”

Reactions from Athletic Directors

Coastal Carolina’s athletic director, Chance Miller, also weighed in on the situation during a press conference on Sunday night. He stated that the ejections significantly impacted what was deemed a must-win game for his team.

Miller noted, “These decisions were executed with an alarming rush, lacking any effort at de-escalation and deprived our student-athletes of the essential leadership they depend on during this remarkable postseason journey.”

He emphasized, “This is not just about one decision or one call—it revolves around process and a standard of professionalism. At such a pivotal moment in college baseball, our program and players deserved a much better experience.”
