EXCLUSIVE REPORT: The FBI has commenced criminal investigations into three prominent children’s hospitals following commitments from Attorney General Pam Bondi to enforce federal laws against female genital mutilation. This step aims to protect children from potentially irreversible surgeries related to gender transitions.
The hospitals under scrutiny are Boston Children’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. These facilities have become known for providing gender transition procedures for minors in the United States, according to a source familiar with the ongoing investigation who spoke to Fox News Digital on condition of anonymity.
Shortly after taking office, President Donald Trump issued an executive order mandating that all federal agencies work towards halting the provision of “irreversible medical interventions” for individuals under 18 years of age suffering from gender dysphoria. Following this directive, Attorney General Bondi released a memorandum instructing Justice Department personnel to enforce 18 U.S.C. § 116, which prohibits female genital mutilation.
FBI Seeks Public Assistance
The FBI has also encouraged the public to provide tips regarding any children adversely affected by gender-affirming surgeries.
In her memo, Bondi emphasized the seriousness of the issue, stating that medical practitioners, hospitals, and clinics are now on notice. She made it clear that performing, attempting to perform, or conspiring to perform female genital mutilation on anyone under 18 constitutes a felony in the United States. This crime carries a maximum prison sentence of ten years for each count. Bondi instructed all U.S. Attorneys to investigate any suspected cases of FGM, whether under the guise of gender-affirming care or otherwise, and prosecute violations vigorously.
Additionally, Bondi announced the formation of a Coalition Against Child Mutilation through the Justice Department. This coalition aims to collaborate with state attorneys general to build legal cases against hospitals and practitioners breaching federal or state laws concerning female genital mutilation. The memo indicated that the Justice Department’s Office of Legislative Affairs is working on drafting legislation that would establish a private right of action for children and their parents if healthy body parts have been damaged by medical professionals via chemical or surgical procedures.
As the Trump administration intensified its efforts to ban irreversible transgender medical treatments for minors, numerous hospitals have revised their policies concerning who can access gender transition treatments and surgeries.
Policy Adjustments Among Major Hospitals
Earlier this month, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles revealed plans to permanently shut down its Center for Transyouth Health and Development, effective July 22, 2025. The hospital cited significant operational, legal, and financial risks arising from evolving policies at both state and federal levels, as reported by CBS News.
Children’s Hospital Los Angeles has not responded to multiple requests for comments from Fox News Digital.
Children’s Hospital Colorado initially ceased offering transgender medical treatments to patients under 19 years of age due to President Trump’s executive order. However, after a judicial ruling that blocked the enforcement of Trump’s directive, the hospital announced it would resume providing puberty blockers and hormone-based treatments for minors.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, a representative from Children’s Hospital Colorado noted that it has never provided transgender surgeries for patients under 18. Furthermore, two years ago, the facility halted such surgeries for individuals over 18 and resolved to refer those patients to external providers starting in 2023.
Boston Children’s Hospital continues to operate its Gender Multispecialty Service (GeMS), which provides transgender hormone therapy, puberty blockers, and social transitioning for young patients. The hospital defines its protocol regarding gender-change surgeries, stating that only patients over 18 are eligible for such procedures. Boston Children’s also provides referrals for gender-transition surgeries for minors.
In a recent communication with Fox News Digital, a spokesperson from Boston Children’s Hospital indicated that they had not received any notifications from the FBI regarding alleged violations of federal law. Furthermore, the FBI maintains a policy of not confirming or commenting on ongoing investigations.
