Washington is experiencing heightened tension as a chaotic president has initiated military action against Iran. This move has raised serious concerns about the safety of American servicemembers in the Middle East, compounded by the lack of a clear strategy or defined objectives. Meanwhile, the Republican Congress appears to have rubber-stamped every one of President Donald Trump’s actions, fearing political retribution, while remaining largely silent as military actions unfold without congressional consent.
To understand the implications, it is essential to recognize that Iran poses a significant threat to U.S. national security. If Iran secures nuclear weapons, it would endanger our troops in the region and beyond. The legal premise exists for President Trump to take any necessary action against Iranian aggression, should it arise without provocation.
Being pro-Constitution should not equate to being pro-Iran. Under current circumstances, a congressional War Powers Act must be invoked before any further military actions are taken. There is no room for ambiguity in clear matters of national safety.
The Trump administration has so far operated without a cohesive plan regarding Iran, including the vital necessity of engaging Congress. The historical outcomes of military engagements without strategic foresight are painfully evident. I served alongside brave individuals who made immense sacrifices due to the failure of leaders managing military actions without direction. My time serving in Afghanistan illustrated the complexities and dangers of mission creep and the perils of an unfocused military initiative.
It seems Republican members of Congress firmly believe there are few repercussions for neglecting their constitutional responsibilities. Instead, their primary concern appears to lie in not crossing Trump. However, I want to emphasize that veterans cannot and will not ignore this trend. As was done before, we will hold Congressional Republicans accountable for their neglected duties.
My experience in this arena is not theoretical. In 2018, I successfully won a seat in a deep-red district, propelled by a Democratic wave, primarily because President Trump failed to deliver on key promises and Republicans did not confront him effectively.
If President Trump continues down this contentious path towards Iran without seeking congressional authorization, and if Republicans choose to neglect their obligations, this will likely culminate in significant losses during the midterm elections. This is not merely speculation; it is a commitment based on observable political trends.
The American public is acutely aware that the current administration lacks the expertise and competence to navigate complex issues, whether foreign or domestic. From the hasty deployment of troops to ill-conceived tariff wars that are wreaking havoc on small businesses, the administration has shown a disconcerting inability to manage challenging situations. Meanwhile, Congressional Republicans have remained passive, failing to provide the oversight their constituents deserve, resulting in widespread dissatisfaction evident in polls and heated town hall meetings.
This critical moment calls for accountability from Congress, yet Republicans have not risen to the occasion. History serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of a disengaged Congress. The disastrous Iraq War under President George W. Bush illustrated the peril of ignoring military leadership and plunging deeper into conflict without a sound strategy.
Americans expressed outrage about that conflict, and in subsequent elections, veterans took decisive actions to ensure accountability. By supporting candidates who challenged Bush and advocating for those who understood the true cost of service, they turned the political tide and held those in office responsible for the consequences of their actions.
Through organized efforts, veterans worked diligently to elect Democratic candidates committed to addressing issues significant to those who serve. We remain steadfast in this mission and will continue to push for accountability.
While Trump may evade accountability, Republican leaders who silently support this perilous course must remain vigilant. The time for inaction has long passed, and they will eventually have to answer to the public, including those who have suffered losses in senseless conflicts fought without due process.
Ultimately, the choice to act is in their hands, but the implications of inaction are clear.
