American citizens are being urged to stay alert following recent U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites and a series of arrests involving Iranian nationals across the country.
Jeh Johnson, who served as Homeland Security Secretary under Barack Obama, has raised alarms about the potential presence of terror sleeper cells on American soil. He stated that the situation poses a substantial concern for law enforcement and public safety.
During an appearance on Fox & Friends, Johnson addressed the issue directly, emphasizing the gravity of the matter. He remarked, “The presence in this country of undocumented migrants or Iranian nationals with ties to Hezbollah and the IRGC represents, in my judgment, a domestic law enforcement concern of the highest magnitude.”
Following the U.S. military action, the Department of Homeland Security released a memo highlighting a “heightened threat environment” across the nation. The conflict between Israel and Iran has exacerbated fears, especially after Iranian state television warned that all American military personnel and citizens in the region could become legitimate targets.
Recent developments have shown that the situation is not merely theoretical. Earlier this week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced the arrests of over a dozen Iranian undocumented migrants residing in the United States. Some of these individuals faced serious accusations, including violent crimes such as domestic assault and drug offenses. Alarmingly, one was identified as a former sniper for the Iranian army within the last four years.
Johnson has expressed concerns that the threat may extend beyond the most recent arrests and anticipates that additional Iranian nationals may be apprehended in the future. He noted, “That’s not necessarily all of them. My educated speculation is that law enforcement has been tracking these individuals for a while to determine their contacts and networks.”
This apprehension resonates with those in the field, especially as officials link the rising threat of sleeper cells to the Biden administration’s relaxed border policies. Border czar Tom Homan pointed out that under the previous administration, nearly 2,000 migrants managed to evade law enforcement every day.
As the complexity of this issue deepens, other experts echo Johnson’s concerns. They warn that individuals with extremist ties may not wait for instructions from their affiliates. Johnson articulated this evident risk by saying, “Sleepers don’t necessarily follow directions from their sponsors. Someone with connections to the IRGC or Hezbollah in the U.S. might choose to take action independently.”
In response to these rising threats, the FBI has shifted resources to enhance cybersecurity protocols and expand counterterrorism efforts. Despite the alarming climate, Johnson reassured Americans that there is no reason to panic. He emphasized the importance of continuing daily routines while remaining watchful for suspicious behaviors.
