During the recording of his highly anticipated new album, ‘Who Believes in Angels’, Elton John experienced a turbulent creative process marked by frustration and self-doubt. The legendary musician’s collaboration with Brandi Carlile proved to be both intense and transformative.
On Wednesday, John, 77, shared a trailer for the short film ‘Who Believes In Angels? Stories On The Edge Of Creation’. This behind-the-scenes look reveals how the album was crafted over a swift 20 days. The candid footage captures John’s emotional state as he navigated the pressures of recording in a studio alongside producer Andrew Watt and longtime collaborators, including lyricist Bernie Taupin.
The trailer opens with a moment of tension when Watt asks, “Are you ready to record?” to which John retorts, “I’m sitting here, aren’t I?” As filming progresses, John’s frustration escalates, showcasing a raw glimpse of the pressures he faced.
In a poignant voiceover, John reflects on his mentality during those recording sessions, stating, “Reality is, I was exhausted. I had a lot of doubt… and I was a nightmare.” He admitted to feeling angry, tired, and irritable, underscoring the emotional toll of the creative process.
Watt chimes in with concern, reminding John of the collaborative nature of their work. “Dude, I’m just trying to make the song as best as it can be. You’re so impatient,” he says, revealing the mounting pressure in the studio.
As tensions rise, John famously exclaims, “F—ing nightmare!” while slamming his headphones down, evidencing his struggle to cope with the stresses of production.
Brandi Carlile, who has admired John since childhood, voiced her own struggles throughout the collaboration. She noted that John often battled moments of insecurity, especially when the stakes were high. “I’m having a hard time connecting to Elton,” she confessed, reflecting the immense emotional weight surrounding their project.
John echoed these sentiments, expressing a sense of uncertainty about the direction of the album. “I don’t want to do it,” he shared in a frustrated voiceover, tearing up sheet music in a moment of desperation.
Despite early tensions, John persevered, ultimately realizing the importance of completing the album for the sake of his collaborators. As the atmosphere shifted, he found his footing, leading to a transformative creative breakthrough.
Reflecting on this change, John noted, “The fog started to lift… finally it all started to flow.” The collaboration’s dynamic improved as the artists fell into rhythm with one another, promoting an environment conducive to creativity.
In the midst of this challenging process, John disclosed his desire for artistic growth. He expressed a yearning to “play better, sing better, write better” despite the obstacles posed by age and health. With over 50 years of experience, he and Taupin embarked on a journey fueled by a shared ambition for innovation.
Carlile lauded the final product, describing the album as “spectacular for all the ages.” John shared his immense satisfaction, stating that ‘Who Believes in Angels’ was indeed “immaculate.”
The emotional climax of the trailer showcases a heartfelt moment where John breaks down in tears at the keyboard, enveloped in a hug from Carlile. He expressed that this moment was unprecedented in his storied career, highlighting the personal stakes involved in the album’s creation.
‘Who Believes in Angels’ is set to be released on April 4, promising to deliver a poignant and reflective musical experience.
