One of the world’s foremost culinary guides is enhancing its presence across North America. The Michelin Guide recently announced an exciting expansion to Florida, unveiling plans to include three new destinations in 2025.
The new additions will significantly enhance the guide’s coverage in Florida, encompassing greater Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach County, and Pinellas County, which includes Clearwater and St. Petersburg. These areas will join the already featured cities of Miami, Orlando, and Tampa.
Looking ahead, the Florida expansion will culminate in a comprehensive statewide selection by 2026.
“Florida continues to raise the bar with its emerging culinary talent, international influences, and the palpable passion of its local restaurant communities,” stated Gwendal Poullennec, the international director of the Michelin Guide, in a recent news release. His remarks underscore the state’s dynamic culinary landscape.
“Over the past three years, we’ve closely observed the evolution of Florida’s culinary scene. Our inspectors have highlighted diverse discoveries, and we anticipate exploring these new destinations to showcase their culinary excellence,” Poullennec added.
The Michelin Guide first entered the North American market in 2005 with its inaugural release for New York. Since then, it has expanded to include 14 guides, most of which have debuted in the post-pandemic era.
Major cities like San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and California followed suit, with their guides being introduced in various years. Additionally, five regions—three in Florida and two in Canada—received their own guides in 2022.
During the previous year, Colorado and Atlanta earned recognition, followed by Texas, Mexico, and Quebec establishing their guides. This progressive expansion highlights Michelin’s commitment to recognizing culinary talent across North America.
A comprehensive evaluation of potential locations precedes the establishment of a new guide. Michelin Guide spokesperson Carly Grieff explained, “Before launching a new guide, our inspection team conducts a thorough study of the area. Inspectors pinpoint key culinary hotspots that warrant inclusion in the inaugural selection.”
Grieff elaborated that as the Michelin Guide operates on a long-term strategy, it often extends its geographical reach within states or regions over time, hence the inclusion of three new Florida destinations for 2025.
This expansion presents a valuable opportunity for restaurants in these newly added areas. They will now have the chance to earn a prestigious Michelin star, a coveted accolade that is recognized and respected worldwide.
Achieving a three-star rating symbolizes culinary excellence and significantly enhances a restaurant’s reputation. Michelin stars are considered one of the highest honors within the restaurant industry, alongside other influential rankings like Zagat.
Michelin Guide inspectors adhere to strict criteria when evaluating restaurants. They assess the quality of ingredients, flavor mastery, chef personality, value, and consistency across visits. These inspections occur anonymously to ensure an unbiased evaluation of each establishment.
Currently, inspectors are actively scouting dining options and securing reservations in the newly included territories, as stated in the recent news release.
Looking ahead, the Michelin Guide remains committed to identifying exciting new destinations globally. Grieff noted, “Once all the conditions align to showcase the quality of the culinary scene in a given region, the Michelin Guide initiates its process.”
While the Michelin Guide is contemplating further expansions, Grieff remarked, “At this time, we do not have any updates regarding new guide destinations in North America.”
The ongoing commitment of the Michelin Guide to recognize and celebrate exceptional dining options continues to raise the standard for culinary excellence.
