Former Vice President Kamala Harris is facing a lukewarm reception among Democratic fundraisers in California regarding her potential gubernatorial bid. Recent reports indicate that many who contribute to the party are not excited about the possibility.
Politico interviewed various Democratic donors to gauge their thoughts on Harris’s interest in running for governor after her recent presidential election loss. Many expressed that the prospect has not generated significant enthusiasm within the donor community.
One Southern California fundraiser commented, “She still would probably lead, but honestly, no one is incredibly pumped.” This sentiment reflects a broader uncertainty that has emerged around Harris’s future political plans.
Since losing the presidential election to Donald Trump, Harris has shifted her focus to a potential gubernatorial run in 2026. She hopes to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom, who is term-limited. Reliable sources close to Harris suggest that she intends to make a decision about her campaign by the end of summer.
Harris faces a pivotal choice: either to embark on a gubernatorial campaign or to aim for the presidency again in 2028. Early polling shows she holds a notable lead among potential Democratic candidates, leveraging her previous national exposure which enhances her name recognition.
Despite her advantages, influential donors have expressed reservations. Politico noted that several major contributors fear Harris’s candidacy might resurface painful memories from the 2024 election cycle. Some donors are still frustrated by her expensive campaign, which ultimately ended in debt, and they seek assurances of a clear and effective strategy for securing the governor’s office.
Mather Martin, a prominent fundraiser from San Francisco and a supporter of Harris’s prior campaigns, shared that enthusiasm for her bid appears to have diminished. “There was more enthusiasm at first for Harris’ run. However, I think it waned a bit,” he stated.
Another donor who previously contributed six figures to Harris’s presidential campaign characterized the collapse of her White House bid as traumatic. This donor expressed reluctance to support her in a gubernatorial race. They articulated frustration with the current political landscape, stating, “Kamala just reminds you we are in this complete storm. With Biden, we got bamboozled… I think she did the best she could in that situation, but obviously she knew about the cognitive decline too.”
This donor elaborated, sharing feelings of anger toward the Democratic Party due to what they perceive as missteps during the previous administration. This frustration is evident in their statements about the implications of Harris’s potential campaign.
The concern among contributors is compounded by the reality that a Harris campaign could resurrect discussions of her previous presidential run, which many donors seem keen to avoid. As one donor put it, “Donors realize it’s just going to bring up the whole pathetic last presidential, which no one wants to hear about again. And then it’s the whole ‘Did you know Joe Biden?’ thing.”
Scott Drexel, a donor-adviser from the San Francisco Bay Area, emphasized the lack of overwhelming support for Harris’s anticipated run. He remarked, “It’s very fair to say there’s not an overwhelming clamor for her gubernatorial bid. It’s very hard for there to be one if it’s not 100 percent clear if she really wants to do it.”
Drexel pointed out the need for Harris to actively campaign for support among Democrats, stating, “She’s going to have to work for the nomination. Every day that passes, there’s less of a sense of inevitability about her candidacy.”
Joe Cotchett, a Democratic donor and prominent San Francisco trial lawyer, indicated that Harris is currently engaging with individuals around California to assess whether she should run for governor. He added, “If she does, she’s going to have very difficult problems.”
Despite the buzz surrounding her potential candidacy, it seems that Harris’s path remains uncertain. The mixed reactions from major donors suggest a challenging environment for her upcoming decision.
As the summer approaches, observers are keen to see how Harris navigates these complex dynamics in her attempts to either revitalize her political career or mount another presidential campaign. With major challenges ahead, her decision will be crucial not only for her political future but also for the broader Democratic landscape in California.
Harris’s team has yet to respond to requests for comment, leaving many speculating about her next steps in this evolving political narrative.
