A Football Career that Shifted Directions

Tatum’s story began as a promising college football player at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Despite his athletic aspirations, the NFL draft did not turn in his favor, leading him to reevaluate his career options. With a college degree in hand, he explored various job opportunities in Tucson.

The need to provide for his family became a key factor in his decision-making. After careful consideration, he decided to apply to join the police department, which responded positively to his application.

Inspiration from a Ride-Along

A pivotal moment came during a ride-along with Officer Sean Payne. This experience proved transformative, inspiring Tatum to pursue a career in law enforcement.

Tatum recalled, “He’s since retired, but you know he changed my life. Doing that ride-along with him inspired me to be a police officer. For the first time in my life, I saw a hero in Sean Payne, and I said, ‘I want to be a hero like him.'” His desire to serve the community became evident, and he described his time as a police officer as “incredible.”

Tatum’s Contributions to Law Enforcement

Throughout his law enforcement career, Tatum took on significant roles, including serving as a SWAT operator and a field training officer. He was also crisis intervention trained, enabling him to negotiate and assist individuals facing crises, including those contemplating suicide.

Reflecting on his contributions, he stated, “I was there to help.” This dedication represented a full-circle moment, especially considering Tatum’s childhood experiences with police were far from positive.

A Troubling Past with Law Enforcement

Growing up in a community where his interactions with officers were often negative, Tatum held a complicated view of the police. He admitted, “I didn’t really like police officers from the community I grew up in. I got arrested at eight years old for smoking marijuana in a vacant house. My first experiences with police officers involved going to jail, rather than experiencing officers committed to helping.”

The Awakening to Political Engagement

A significant political awakening occurred for Tatum when he first noted the taxes deducted from his paycheck. This realization prompted him to engage in voting and political activism. He began to understand that his views were more aligned with the Republican Party than he had previously thought.
