Marco Rubio Denounces Iran’s Threats Against IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi

Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed his strong disapproval regarding recent Iranian threats directed at International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi. He labeled these threats as unacceptable and deserving of condemnation.

The warning from Rubio followed remarks made by the vice speaker of the Iranian parliament, Hamid Reza Haji Babaei, who announced a ban on Grossi’s activities and the removal of surveillance equipment from various nuclear facilities. Haji Babaei accused Israel of obtaining sensitive information related to Iran’s nuclear operations, according to a report from Mehr news.

In a post on X, Rubio emphasized the importance of the IAEA’s verification and monitoring efforts within Iran’s nuclear program. He praised the professionalism and dedication of Grossi and his agency. Furthermore, Rubio urged Iran to ensure the safety and security of IAEA personnel.

Recently, the IAEA addressed the damage sustained at Iranian nuclear sites, a situation that occurred following U.S. airstrikes targeting critical locations, including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

While appearing on Fox News’ “The Story with Martha MacCallum,” Grossi detailed the extent of the damage at Isfahan and Natanz. He noted that Natanz experienced significant damage, especially in one of its centrifuge halls where uranium enrichment was taking place.

Although a ceasefire agreement was reached between Israel and Iran, Grossi alleged that approximately 900 pounds of potentially enriched uranium had been relocated to a historic site near Isfahan. He underscored the necessity of precise information, asserting that the IAEA does not engage in speculation. Presently, the agency lacks knowledge about the exact location of this material.

In another segment of their discussion, Grossi mentioned that Iranian officials had communicated to him that they were undertaking protective measures, which might include relocating materials linked to their nuclear program.

Grossi reiterated the IAEA’s role in monitoring Iran’s nuclear material. He declared that his ongoing responsibility is to ascertain the whereabouts of the material, as Iran is obligated to report and account for all nuclear substances it possesses.

For context, President Donald Trump made a pivotal decision to withdraw from the original 2015 nuclear agreement that Iran had signed with a coalition including the U.S., the U.K., the European Union, France, Germany, and Russia.
