Sharpton Urges NYC Mayoral Candidate to Engage with Jewish Leaders and Clarify Stance on Controversial Rhetoric

Rev. Al Sharpton, prominent MSNBC host and civil rights leader, stressed on Monday that New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani should meet with Jewish leaders. This call comes after Mamdani’s refusal to denounce the controversial anti-Israel slogan ‘globalize the intifada.’

During a panel discussion on MSNBC, Sharpton shared his thoughts on Mamdani’s recent statements, highlighting that he does not perceive any hostile intentions from the candidate, who is a democratic socialist and practicing Muslim. Nevertheless, Sharpton emphasized the importance of clarity regarding the slogan as Mamdani campaigns for mayor following an unexpected victory in the Democratic primary last week.

Sharpton articulated, ‘He’s running for mayor of New York. You need to take off the table, ‘Do you support international intifada?’ Period. Not go around it. I understand you don’t want to be forced into something, but I don’t think that’s what he stands for from what he said to us. And he should say that outright.’

At a rally for the National Action Network, an organization founded by Sharpton, the host expressed his sentiments about the urgent need for Mamdani to take a firm stand against the phrase ‘globalize the intifada.’ This slogan has been widely interpreted as a call for violent actions against the state of Israel.

Sharpton’s remarks followed a viral moment for Mamdani on NBC’s Meet The Press, where the candidate was asked directly if he would condemn the inflammatory phrase. Instead of providing a direct response, Mamdani remarked, ‘That’s not language that I use. The language that I use, and the language that I will continue to use to lead this city is that which speaks clearly to my intent, which is an intent grounded in the belief in universal human rights.’

In the face of escalating scrutiny, Mamdani’s encounter with Sharpton signifies a pivotal moment in his mayoral campaign. On MSNBC, Sharpton emphasized that while he found no evidence of antisemitism during his discussions with Mamdani, the candidate must still openly reject the problematic phrase. ‘Well, I think he definitely denounced from his speech antisemitism and Islamophobia, but let’s deal directly with it. Let’s not skirt around the issue. We’re not talking about something subtle here,’ he noted, referring to the slogan’s implications.

Sharpton drew from his personal experiences, recalling his own missteps in addressing similar sensitive topics early in his career as an activist. He recounted criticism he received from Coretta Scott King regarding his past remarks, stating, ‘I remember 20, 30 years ago. I said things – nothing like endorsing violence – but that was offensive to Jews, offensive to gay people. Mrs. Coretta Scott King – Martin Luther King’s widow – said to me, ‘Al, you cannot take words lightly.’

In addition, Sharpton echoed the sentiments of Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt, who urged Mamdani to engage constructively with the Jewish community. ‘Secondly, I agree with Jonathan. He ought to meet with the Jewish community, and I think he will,’ Sharpton affirmed.

Critics have noted that Mamdani has consistently avoided condemning the ‘intifada’ phrase, even during a separate interview with Tim Miller before the primary election. Prominent Democratic figures, including Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Representative Hakeem Jeffries, have also voiced their concerns regarding Mamdani’s choice of language.

As Mamdani navigates his campaign, the pressure to clarify his stance on such contentious issues grows. His team has not yet provided a response to requests for comments regarding Sharpton’s observations or the ongoing controversy.

The Path Forward for Mamdani

As the election approaches, Mamdani’s engagement with various communities will be critical. Strong outreach efforts, particularly towards Jewish leaders and supporters, will not only help him address these concerns but could also play a significant role in his campaign strategy.

Reflecting on the situation, political analysts suggest that the mayoral candidate’s responses in the coming days could sway public perception and voter support. The ability to bridge gaps with diverse communities may define his electoral success.

Amid rising tensions between different social groups, clarity and openness in dialogue are paramount for political figures. Mamdani’s leadership style will be scrutinized in the coming weeks as he faces the realities of campaigning within New York City’s complex social fabric.

Ultimately, not only will his ability to navigate these discussions matter, but it will also reflect on his potential to unify diverse constituents under his leadership. The future of New York City leadership rests on these crucial interactions and the candidate’s responses to pressing societal concerns.
