Rep. Dusty Johnson, the sole House member representing South Dakota, has officially declared his candidacy for governor. Johnson made the announcement during a campaign event, confirming what many had speculated for weeks.
As the chair of the House GOP’s Main Street Caucus and a member of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, Johnson seeks to translate his congressional experience into state leadership. He has served in Congress since 2019 after holding a position as vice president at a South Dakota-based engineering and consulting firm. Before stepping into this role, Johnson worked as a South Dakota Public Utilities commissioner from 2005 to 2011 and served as the chief of staff to former Governor Dennis Daugaard.
At the recent campaign event, Johnson shared a video on social media to accompany his announcement. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Congress and highlighted the accomplishments he achieved during his tenure.
“It has been such an honor to work for you in Congress. We rolled up our sleeves and got things moving in the right direction, cutting trillions in wasteful spending, supporting President Trump to secure our border, and finally getting tough on China,” Johnson stated.
He emphasized the importance of local initiatives, stating, “Although those were essential fights to build a better country for our kids, their future does not begin in a far-off place. It starts here, at home, in South Dakota. That is why we need to accelerate our efforts and provide them with a clear path to a promising future.”
Following his announcement, critics emerged online claiming that Johnson has not adequately supported former President Donald Trump. These assertions suggest he may be labeled a
